Random Acts of Kindness - February Wrap-Up

No comments:
Book Soulmates
RAK is a monthly meme hosted by Book Soulmates. You can find out more and join in on the fun HERE.

I participated in Book Soulmates' Random Acts of Kindness (one of my favorite blog memes or whatever you call this one) again last month, as I do most months. If you've never participated, I highly recommend it. The sign-up for the new month is posted around the first of the month.

My February RAK - Sent

I did a bit of Eleventh Hour gifting this month. I have sent out quite a bit of stuff this month, so it wasn't until today that I realized that I hadn't sent any formal RAKs! (I try to randomly gift books to folks throughout the month, and I seldom get around to posting that.) Anywho, this is what went out:

I sent Touched by Corrine Jackson to Memrie at Dark Angel Reader from her Amazon wishlist on the RAK form.

I sent Everneath by Brodi Ashton to Froggy at Froggarita's Bookcase from her Amazon wishlist on the RAK form.

My February RAK - Received

I didn't get any formal RAKs, but I did get two fairly random acts of kindness bestowed upon me. The very sweet Lisa sent me an Amazon gift card to buy books to review on the blog. I don't get a lot of support for the blog in my personal life, so this really made my month. I also received a visit from the Book Fairy, who sent me an anonymous Amazon gift card. I'm not quite sure what to think of it, so I'll just be incredibly grateful and leave it at that.

Did you participate in RAK this month? Yes? Well, link me up then!

Blog Tour (Topic Thoughts & Giveaway): Victoria Rebels by Carolyn Meyer

4 comments:

Tour Schedule

Queen Victoria’s personal journals inform this captivating first-person account of one of history’s most prominent female leaders.

Queen Victoria most certainly left a legacy—under her rule as the longest reigning female monarch in history, the British Empire was greatly expanded and significant industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military changes occurred within the United Kingdom. To be a young woman in a time when few other females held positions of power was to lead in a remarkable age—and because Queen Victoria kept personal journals, this historical novel from award-winning author Carolyn Meyer shares authentic emotional insight along with accurate information, weaving a true story of intrigue and romance.

Topic Thoughts
by Carolyn Meyer

Topic 1. What made you decide or when did you know that you wanted to write historical fiction for young adult readers?

I always knew that I wanted to write fiction, but I had no idea how to make that happen or what direction it would take. My early short stories were rejected; so were my first novels. Eventually I was advised to try writing for children, and my first efforts were rewarded: how-to books for kids. As I gained confidence and experience, I tried a young adult novel; it was published, and several more followed. More or less accidentally, I wrote a historical novel about a character who interested me. Then an editor suggested I write about British royalty, and I loved it. After all those years, I had found my niche!

Topic 2. Tell one of the funniest or strangest true stories that you found while researching Victoria Rebels.

Laney McMann
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance/Urban Fantasy
Publisher: J. Taylor Publishing
Release Date: September 9, 2013

Normal people don't believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.

Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.

Or is that all in her head?

Layla doesn't know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.

No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?

The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.

In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.

Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?

The answer may never be far enough ...
away.

Blog Tour (Review): Falling for Her Fiancé by Cindi Madsen

1 comment:
Danielle and Wes have been best friends since college, so when Wes needs a date for his sister’s wedding and Dani needs a partner for her company’s retreat, they devise the perfect plan: a fake engagement to get through both events unscathed. Adrenaline-junkie Wes can prove to both his ex and his family that he’s well and truly moved on, and serious-minded Dani can prove to her boss that she’s worthy of the promotion he seems to only want to give to a family-oriented employee.

But amid the fake swoons, fake kisses, and forced proximity, neither expects the very real feelings that develop. There’s nothing more dangerous than falling for your best friend…but what if the landing is worth the fall?

Title: Falling for Her Fiancé
Author: Cindi Madsen
Publisher:
Bliss (Entangled)
Release Date: January 14, 2013
Acquired Via: Entangled Publishing

My Review

Falling for Her Fiancé is a sweet romance by Cindi Madsen that really makes me eat all of my words about romance novels. I've been on a bit of a binge lately on the genre, and this is the best (strictly) romance that I've read in 2013. While it follows the typical "boy meets girl" pattern that you expect, it is cleverly written and has delightful characters. Also, it is a very clean read that would be perfectly fine for teenagers.

Dani and Wes are those two friends that everyone but them knows should be together. (We've all known those two, right?) They're always on the phone and have kept in touch over the years, through Dani moving to another state and both of their failed romances. However, they are finally met with social pressures that seem to demand them to be in a relationship (though not necessarily with each other). They jump on the opportunity, though not without quite a few awkward moments, laughs, and Indiana Jones references. Dani and Wes spend the novel in an elaborate dance of near-misses. There was, of course, an ex-girlfriend and a potential new man thrown in the mix to make things interesting for the pair. It had me at the edge of my seat and furiously thumping the iPad to keep the pages turning fast enough.

4 comments:
Julia Jones is an eighteen-year-old science prodigy with a big secret. But after Julia revives Dr. Bertel from a near-fatal electrocution, strange things start to happen.

Without warning, Dr. Bertel disappears. Then Julia receives threatening notes on her car, and someone has her followed. The young police officer assigned to the case, Austin Moore, believes the events are connected and asks her to help him solve the mystery of Bertel's disappearance. Instantly attracted to him, Julia agrees. Still, she knows that she has seen Austin somewhere before, if only she could put her finger on it.

Will Julia uncover the mystery of Bertel's disappearance before it's too late, and does she dare trust Austin with her heart?

Title: Eternal
Author: HG Nadel
Publisher:
Sourced Media Books
Release Date: January 2, 2013
Acquired Via: TLC Book Tours

My Review

Everyone has a guilty pleasure, and romance novels are one of mine. They aren't always my thing, but sometimes they serve as a really great palate cleanser to prevent burnout from all of the science fiction and fantasy that I read. H.G. Nadel's Eternal was exactly the book that I've been needing.

Eternal is about a young girl named Julia who has just lost her mother and is working as a summer intern/research assistant at a forensic pathology lab in California. The book reminds me of M.J. Rose's The Reincarnationist series because of the strange dreams the main character, Julia, has about a girl in medieval times who looks just like her. These dreams begin to occur after an accident in the lab with her mentor, Dr. Bertel, and her meeting Detective Austin Moore, who is working the case. There is a bit of mystery and suspense in the novel surrounding the strange circumstances of Dr. Bertel's disappearance from the hospital and the strange attacks on Julia that begin to occur.

A major transformation is happening in today’s workplace. This groundbreaking anthology chronicles personal narratives from lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied executive trailblazers who have conquered adversity and ushered in policies that affirm and support the LGBT community in the workplace. Out & Equal at Work profiles an advocacy organization located at the intersection of the private sector and the broader social movement: Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, and its visionary Founding Executive Director, Selisse Berry.

Guest Post
by Selisse Berry

I realized a longtime dream with the publication of Out & Equal at Work: From Closet to Corner Office, because it captures the great civil rights movement of our time: equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community.

The idea for Out & Equal at Work grew organically. A large part of it is sharing the growth of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the organization I founded sixteen years ago to advance workplace equality for LGBT people. Out & Equal has grown into an international nonprofit organization working with multinational corporations, executives, employee resource group leaders, and diversity professionals to create more inclusive workplaces.

This collection of essays and photographs by a long-time progressive educator and photographer explores the art of teaching, the minds of children, and how the educational infrastructure stifles the growth of both. Innocents examines educational practices, debates and theory, and advocates learning with children rather than teaching to them. This is a passionate book about the intersection of education and the love of learning.

I have come to believe that if I hadn’t left the university behind I never would have tried writing anything beyond equations; equations that might or might not have mattered to anybody else. Perhaps it also had to do with turning forty and that certain amount of pondering that comes then. Well too, my wife of 18 years and mother of 5 children chose to divorce me and she would keep the home and the children. I was the one to pack up and move, from Michigan to Colorado.

Welcome to my stop on the Romance is in the Air Giveaway Hop, which is being hosted by two lovely ladies: Kathy at I Am A Reader, Not A Writer and the author Rachael Anderson.

What You Can Win

As you may know by now, romance isn't my favorite genre to read. I'll be honest - I love a good historical romance or PNR from time to time, but I don't think Kathy would like me including the Sookie Stackhouse series or Philippa Gregory's adult novels on the hop. So today I am going to let the winner of my stop choose one of my favorite YA romances or one of their sequels. Here are your options:

She wants to see their faces when they find out they’ve been fooled into thinking an ape girl was a norm. She isn’t expecting to make friends with the enemy, to risk her life to save norms, or to fall in love.

My Review

If you're an international reader, I know how you feel. Well, a little bit anyways. You know how there are these really fantastic books in the US that come out, and it's impossible for you to get your hands on them? This was a book like that for me. Earth Girl has been out in the UK since last year, but it doesn't release in the States until March! (That's forever for someone who expects a healthy dose of instant gratification in all the things.) Yes, I know I could get it from Fishpond (which is my saving grace sometimes), but honestly, it can be expensive. (This is why I have never bought my own copy of Burn Bright.) So here I am, knowing a book is out in the world, but I'm unable to get my grubby little hands on it.

It's not a good feeling.

In a way, that very thing also reminded me of the main character in Earth Girl, Jarra. There is this whole universe out there, she knows it, and it's out of her reach. When I started reading the book, I thought Jarra would be a girl like this:
