Last year I was a guest author at the 2015 Denver Comic Con in Colorado. I was thrilled to be a part of such an amazing venue, yet terrified at the same time! I’d never appeared in front of such a huge crowd, had never before participated on panels to discuss the craft of writing, or been seated alongside such distinguished authors!
The ultimate panic attack came when I ran late following my book signing, and arrived at the doors to my panel with NASA scientists. The three abreast row of waiting attendees disappeared around the far corner of the long conference hall. My blood ran cold. The woman guarding the door checked my name and pass. “You’re going to have a full house for this one,” she said as if that could possibly ease my nerves. She opened the door to admit me.
The group of waiting men near the platform were my fellow panelists. Two distinguished NASA astrophysicists, one of whom was anxiously waiting for the first ever pictures to arrive from his probe orbiting Pluto, a couple of science fiction writers with more than 120 novels between them—and me—were about to address die-hard science groupies and struggling science fiction writers.
I turned on my heel to escape, but then thought better of it. The guard at the door might prove an obstacle. I plastered a wide smile on my face and approached the group. Introductions were brief and pleasant, then we were asked to take our seats.
They put me in the center, like a thin female filling between thick slices of male Ph.D. bread.
The stream of bodies entering and locating empty seats went on forever. Standing room only prompted the guard to close the doors on those not lucky enough to have been there an hour early.
After introducing ourselves to the seated audience, we were asked questions about real science, writing in the genre, being true to science while still telling a great story, etc. As the questions were tossed our way, a revelation struck. I wasn’t there to be compared to these men with more experience and knowledge about writing, or the physical universe. I was there as one of the audience. Someone starting out, like many of the writers in the seats facing me.
I was merely one step ahead of the sea of bodies. Already published with a couple of books under my name, but so much more within reach when compared to the men flanking me. As the session winded down, I came to appreciate that I belonged alongside those distinguished scientists and prolific, successful writers. I was the bridge of hope for the dreamers and closet-writing souls in the audience. A living, breathing example that they, too, might someday be seated on a Comic Con panel, lucky enough to talk about their love of science and storytelling. Their dreams well within their reach.

About the Author
Sue has been writing since high school but never became serious about it until a skiing accident laid her up for an entire summer and she turned on the word processor to combat the boredom. A couple years later, her first urban fantasy novel, Fade to Black, was a finalist in the RMFW Colorado Gold Writing Contest. By day, she’s a dedicated speech-language therapist in an inner city school district to pay the bills but her life as a writer is her true passion and the creative outlet keeps her sane.Sue is a member of the Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and The Pikes Peak Writers. Her creativity extends into her garden and the culinary arts. She is the second oldest of six girls with an avid reader mom and her dad, the family’s single drop of testosterone in a sea of estrogen. Fate thought it hilarious to give her a son but maternal instincts swing both ways and she didn’t break the little bugger. She lives in Colorado with her miniature dachshund, Snickers and hears from her son, Jonathan whenever he needs something.
