One Year Blogoversary

11 comments:
Honestly, I never believed for a moment that I would make it this far with the blog, yet here I am. I don't know how I ever managed it, but this is this 387th post for the year. I'm looking at BP's stats now, and it is very humbling. 72,000 pageviews, 891 GFC followers, and 127 followers via Feedburner - all I can say is that every person who has ever taken a moment of their time to visit my blog deserves a great big hug.

When I started the blog a year ago (it was technically in June, but one post does not make that the start of a blog), it was because I loved Kevin Hearne and Leah Clifford's books so much that I wanted to have a platform other than Goodreads to gush about them. While reading books for my library, and for BP, I have found many other books and authors that I have loved. I've also met more bloggers that I can think of off the top of my head that I both admire and respect. (Will being #1 for me since he's helped so much. You should shoot him a tweet and congratulate him on his very recent nuptials!) All of this has made me a much more well-rounded reader and taught me to have a greater appreciation of all books.

Since I've started the blog, I've had some changes in my personal life that has made blogging more difficult. There aren't as many reviews or return visits in the past few months because I've had to take a third job, which leaves me with about an hour and a half a day for blogging, reading, AND socializing. (It'll be sorted within the next few weeks.) There has also been an overwhelming amount of illnesses and deaths. I'm not going to bore you with more details, but I just felt that you should at least know why things have slowed down lately. (I'm actually rushing as I type this because I only have thirty minutes to write this post today.) I do plan on a blogoversary event in the coming days, as well as sharing my favorites of 2012 with you along with some fantastic novels that have been left behind. Oh, and there will be giveaways. Excited yet?

Basically, I just want to say thank you to anyone who is reading this. This blog is for you, and I appreciate the wonderful year that you helped create in 2012. I can't wait to see what awaits Bibliophilia, Please in 2013, and I hope to see you here.

Blog Tour (Interview & Giveaway): V is for Virgin by Kelly Oram

2 comments:

Tour Schedule

When Val Jensen gets dumped for her decision to stay a virgin until marriage, the nasty breakup goes viral on YouTube, making her the latest internet sensation.

After days of ridicule from her peers, Val starts a school-wide campaign to rally support for her cause. She meant to make a statement, but she never dreamed the entire nation would get caught up in the controversy.

As if becoming nationally recognized as “Virgin Val” isn’t enough, Val’s already hectic life starts to spin wildly out of control when bad boy Kyle Hamilton, lead singer for the hit rock band Tralse, decides to take her abstinence as a personal challenge.

How can a girl stay true to herself when this year’s Sexiest Man Alive is doing everything in his power to win her over?

Interview with Kelly Oram
Author of V is for Virgin

1. What inspired you to write V is for Virgin?

My little brother told me to write a book where he was a “hot famous rock star who got all the chicks.” I laughed at him, but decided to run with it. (Thank you Kyle.)

2. What was the hardest thing about writing your novel?

Blog Tour (Guest Post & Excerpt): The Adventures of Austin Girl and the Legend of Diablo by Carrie Crain

1 comment:

Austin Girl, a dispirited teenager, discovers a magic Samurai sword, leading her on a journey to Planet Disco to save her kidnapped Grandpa from the nefarious Diablo, and return to Earth before she becomes a permanent guest.

Guest Post
by Carrie Crain

Carrie Crain is the author of the independently published tween novel THE ADVENTURES OF AUSTIN GIRL AND THE LEGEND OF DIABLO.

THE ADVENTURES OF AUSTIN GIRL AND THE LEGEND OF DIABLO, in a word, is bizarre. It’s the outlandish tale of a teenager named Austin Girl who discovers a magic Samurai sword, leading her on this quirky journey to Planet Disco to save her kidnapped Grandpa from the nefarious Diablo, and return to Earth before she becomes a permanent guest.

The story began as a dark comedy screenplay, then morphed into a slapstick screenplay, then transformed into a high-adventure screenplay until finally I wrote it as a fantasy/adventure short novel with comedic elements.

Growing up, I always wanted to be a comedic actress, or a famous self-destructive drummer who had a penchant for throwing lavish soirees and jet-setting to Hawaii just to buy a pound of Kona coffee. But, when my Hollywood dreams were crushed by a lack of confidence and, because I didn’t own any drums, I realized I had a plethora of crazy stories bottled up in my noggin. During a happenstance encounter with a former FBI agent turned Austin screenwriter of action and espionage, I decided to hone my own skills and enroll in screenwriting classes at UCLA and Austin and attend screenwriting workshops to better understand the purpose of slug lines.

Magnificently Magic Read-A-Thon - Day 3

No comments:

I knew that there was no way that I was going to be able to finish the books that I chose for the read-a-thon, but I really didn't think I'd be doing as poorly as I am. I mean, I didn't even get up my Day 2 update yesterday! *sigh*

Work has been really outrageous this weekend, and I'm not getting my usual 1 1/2 hours to myself each day. (Yes, that is how much time I have for reading, blogging, cleaning house, etc.) Hopefully, you guys will forgive me eventually.

My Progress

Nicholas St. North and the Battle of the Nightmare King (The Guardians #1) by William Joyce

Page 99/228

This is a really cute book that is very easy to read, and I WILL finish it for the read-a-thon, if nothing else! I expect to be done with it this evening, barring Hell, high water, and that other nonsense.

Books that Scare Me
by Robert Gray

I don’t scare easy. I’ll be upfront about that first. By the time I was a teen, I’d been exposed to enough horror that I thought nothing could scare me. And then I read Off Season by Jack Ketchum. That book not only terrified me, it changed the way I thought about writing horror fiction.

If you’re not familiar with the story, it’s about a group of friends who stay at a cabin in Maine during - wait for it - the off season. Little do they know, a clan of cannibalistic savages has set up camp not far away. Once night falls, yeah, things don’t go so well for our friends.

The book is brutal. The scenes are rendered with such clarity you feel every bit of pain inflicted — and the pain-to-page ratio is high, make no mistake about it. It’s not an easy book to read, and it’s not for everyone. I loved it.

Book Blast (Giveaway): A Hard Act to Follow by Henry Bushkin

No comments:

A Hard Act to Follow
by Henry Bushkin

A Hard Act to Follow is a non-fiction literary account of Henry Bushkin's tenure as Johnny Carson's lawyer, business partner, and friend. The book gives genuine insight into the 'Carson behind Johnny' with candid personal vignettes about the two, during the rollicking years when Johnny was the undisputed king of television. This is an engaging, eye-opening, anecdote-packed story about a young lawyer and his client, one of the biggest celebrities in the country. This funny, unfiltered account gives readers a look at the Johnny Carson that none but a select few really knew.

A Hard Act to Follow
by Henry Bushkin provides a stirring account into Johnny Carson’s world—as told by Carson’s closest confidant. A New Yorker article by Kenneth Tynan from 1978, included the following question and answer:

Tynan: When you’re at home, whom do you entertain?
Carson: My lawyer, Henry Bushkin, who’s probably my best friend.

Praise for A Hard Act to Follow

"I loved the book." - Wayne Newton

"No one would describe Johnny as easy going-there was an edge to him that Bushkin always managed to soften. He continues to do that in this book. There was that challenging side of Johnny which is also captured in the book. Henry was Johnny's closest friend for many years, which becomes clear through many of the wonderful chapters of the book. All in all a great book to read." - Bob Trapenberg

Though ancient law mandates Allai’s death, she still has one last chance of survival. His name is Drake Rhaize, and he swears he can lead Allai to a sanctuary for Mages. Allai hasn’t seen Drake in years, but she remembers him as the Demon boy who used to hold her close and softly whisper that he’d keep her safe. But Drake has changed since then: he’s now suspected of murder, and has been out-cast for betraying his own kind.

While Allai doesn’t trust Drake, she has no choice but to put her life in his hands and hope he can get her to safety. Because Allai’s father has hired a pack of Demons to bring her back to him, dead or alive–and Demons never stop the hunt.

None of these are really review books, but books that I really would like to read. Since it's just the weekend, it won't hurt things a bit to take a few days away from review books!

Book Thoughts: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

5 comments:
This isn't a review or anything of the book, just something that came to mind as I was listening to the book in the car. I generally try to reread the Harry Potter books - with the exception of the last two - during the fall, into the holidays. Being as I'm reviewing books now and forcing myself outside of my cozy little reading box, I've been listening to the audiobooks in the car. This is my first time in experiencing the series in this format, and it is definitely worth it. (Jim Dale might just rock my world a little.) Since the books are being provided to me in someone else's voice, there are things that I'm noticing because my mind has more free time to wonder.

Why did the Ministry of Magic never find Sirius Black?!

Yes, I'm very well aware that he was in hiding, but something occurred to me while listening.

Owls.

When Ron Weasley snatched up Pigwidgeon at the Owlery in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and threw him out the window to deliver Harry's letter, it made me why the Ministry never tried something like this.

Couldn't they have used an owl with a tracking spell to search him out?

I'm sure that some wizard (Snape, for example) could have magicked some parchment since it's simple enough to assume that Harry and Sirius would be corresponding.

Yes, I realize that the story would not have been nearly as good if any of those scenarios had played out, but I seriously thought about this most of the day.

Has this occurred to any of you? If this has been addressed anywhere (and I'm sure it has), how was the idea dismissed? I'm interested in reading your thoughts.

Blog Tour (Guest Post & Giveaway): The Cypher by Julian Rosado-Machain

2 comments:

GUARDIANS INC.: THE CYPHER is two stories in one. A glimpse into a multinational company that is in reality the oldest of secret societies, one that spans close to seven thousand years of existence, weaving in and out of history, guiding and protecting humanity from creatures and forces that most of us believe are only mythology and fairy tales.

The other is the story of Thomas Byrne, a young man thrust into secrets he shouldn’t be aware of and dangers he shouldn’t face but, that he ultimately will, for he is a Cypher. The only one who can steer humanity’s future.

The ultimate conspiracy theory is that Magic is real. Kept in check by technology but, every five hundred years the balance can shift and, if it does, technology will fail and those creatures we’ve driven into myth will come back with a vengeance.

To protect the present, Guardians Incorporated needs to know the future.

How to Avoid the Rejection Blues
by Julian Rosado-Machain

Ah, the rejection blues! When all the hope built up during those long, interminable weeks that pass between sending a query letter or a manuscript and receiving a response is annihilated by the simple "Thank you, but...."

I blame the "but.." God, how I learned to hate the "but...".

Book Blast (Excerpts & Giveaway): The Alchemists Academy by Kailin Gow

No comments:

The Alchemists Academy Book 1: Stones to Ashes
by Kailin Gow

What do you learn here...at the Academy? Wirt asks. Magic? The responsibility to use your powers responsibly? Uh...something like that, his roommate Spencer said. More like how to rule worlds. Wirt, is used to being shuffled from foster home to foster home, adopting a devil-may-care attitude toward the world along the way. Now he's in a school he can t escape, learning to develop his latent magical abilities, for what use, he doesn't know...to save his world or to destroy it...

Excerpt from Stones to Ashes

Wirt screwed his eyes shut, wishing fervently that he was somewhere, anywhere else. Right now, being back with Joan and Peter was looking an awful lot more appetizing. First, though, he had to find some way to get out of here…

Wirt doubled up as his stomach suddenly cramped. For a moment, he though he had been hit, but that hypothesis went by the wayside as the feeling spread to every muscle in his body at once. As far as Wirt knew, and thanks to some of his earlier misadventures he did know, not even three people could manage to hit you everywhere simultaneously. Wirt forced his eyes open, and then quickly shut them again, because the golden radiance surrounding him was simply too bright to look though. Around him, the gasps of the three bullies were clearly audible.

“He’s glowing, Rich. Why is he glowing?”

“How should I know? Look, just grab him.”

“You grab him. He could be radioactive or something, the way he’s glowing.”

“Oh, so it’s all right for me to grab radiation boy, is it?”

Review: Splintered by A.G. Howard

3 comments:
This stunning debut captures the grotesque madness of a mystical under-land, as well as a girl’s pangs of first love and independence. Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.

When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.

Title: Splintered
Author: A.G. Howard
Publisher:
Amulet (ABRAMS)
Release Date: January 1, 2013
Acquired Via: Krazy Book Lady

My Review

As far as Writing goes, Splintered was a very easy read that had many of the same qualities of the classic work to which it pays homage. It does not have the scope of oddities and poetry as Alice in Wonderland or Through the Looking Glass, but A.G. Howard does plant poetry that plays off nursery rhymes and other bits of the classic story. Many of Carroll's original characters emerge in the story, but they are used in such a way that they are utterly unique creations. Anything more that I could share would potentially be a spoiler, and this is a book you do not want to have spoiled in the slightest.

Title: Geekomancy (Ree Reyes #1)
Author:
Michael R. Underwood
Publisher: Pocket Star
Release Date: July 10, 2012

Clerks meets Buffy the Vampire the Slayer in this original urban fantasy eBook about Geekomancers—humans that derive supernatural powers from pop culture.

Ree Reyes’s life was easier when all she had to worry about was scraping together tips from her gig as a barista and comicshop slave to pursue her ambitions as a screenwriter.

When a scruffy-looking guy storms into the shop looking for a comic like his life depends on it, Ree writes it off as just another day in the land of the geeks. Until a gigantic “BOOM!” echoes from the alley a minute later, and Ree follows the rabbit hole down into her town’s magical flip-side. Here, astral cowboy hackers fight trolls, rubber-suited werewolves, and elegant Gothic Lolita witches while wielding nostalgia-powered props.

Ree joins Eastwood (aka Scruffy Guy), investigating a mysterious string of teen suicides as she tries to recover from her own drag-your-heart-through-jagged-glass breakup. But as she digs deeper, Ree discovers Eastwood may not be the knight-in-cardboard armor she thought. Will Ree be able to stop the suicides, save Eastwood from himself, and somehow keep her job?

My Review

This book got me at the title. Geekomancy. Who wouldn’t at least read the excerpt of a book which such a cool title? And that’s just the tip of a can of awesome that doesn’t stop until the last page.

In it, we follow the story of Ree, Rhiannon Anna Maria Reyes, as she stumbles/jumps into the rabbit whole and lands in a world full of geekyness. A world where all the fantasy books, memorabilia, props and toys have power. Power fueled by nostalgia and the love the fans provide to make them come to life. Like I said: Awesome.

For What It's Worth
by Karey White

Twenty-four year-old, Abby Benson has dreams of owning her own wedding cake shop. An inheritance from her aunt gives her the ability to make those dreams come true. She hires Dane, a handsome contractor, to help her get the bakery up and running and soon they’re moving toward their own happy ending.

Unsure what to charge for her cakes, Abby has a crazy idea to let the customer decide what they think their cake is worth. This plan has its ups and downs, but the novelty of the idea makes her a local celebrity. When she is interviewed on television about the unusual idea, business booms and Abby has cake adventures she never dreamed possible. But as her fame grows, Abby is swept up in a whirlwind that threatens everything she values. With the challenges that face her, will she be able to determine what is worth the most?

Praise:

"Reading Karey White’s books, like eating chocolate cake, is always satisfying and brings a smile to my face. For What It’s Worth is light, romantic, and delicious. It’s a great pleasure read. Sit down and get lost in the charming world of wedding cakes and love. As an added bonus, each chapter starts with a recipe, so it’s a novel and cookbook all in one. A fun read!"
