Vivian Maylor is trying to hold it together. But her attempts to build a life with the man she loves seem doomed by the dragon inside her yearning to break free. Vivian is a dreamshifter, the last line of defense between reality and the dreamworld, and the only one of her kind.
Weston Jennings also believes he is the only one of his kind. He fears his powers as a dreamshifter, and resists learning to control them. After suffering a tragic loss, Weston heads deep into the woods of the Pacific Northwest to embrace a safe life of solitude. But when a terrible mistake leads to an innocent’s death, his guilt drives him to his former home, where he encounters what he never thought he would find: another shifter.
Now Vivian and Weston must work together to defeat a new threat to the dreamworld.
Interview
1. Please tell us a little bit about Wakeworld in your own words but with a Twitter twist – 140 characters or less.
Locked into Wakeworld by a power hungry dragon, Vivian joins forces with a rogue dreamshifter to rescue her lover and save the dream worlds
2. Where did you get the idea for the Between series?
The idea for the Between grew out of that place midway between dreaming and waking, where you're not sure which part is dream and which is reality. I'm not sure where the dragons came from – but I wouldn't be surprised if they were hanging out somewhere waiting for a story to occupy and planted ideas in my head.
3. What was the most fun part about writing Wakeworld?
Letting Vivian finally do some dreamshifting and have access to her inner dragon. I also really enjoyed developing the mythology.
4. What is your favorite distraction that you indulge in whenever you are writing?
Facebook and Twitter. And making coffee. And fetching snacks. And reading just one more page of a book. Really, it's surprising I get any writing done at all!
5. Which books or authors would you say have affected or inspired you the most?
Charles Dickens, Tolkien, L'Engle. Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionovar Tapestry, the fairy tales of George MacDonald, all of the Narnia books by C.S. Lewis. And, oddly enough, also the poetry of Tennyson, especially the poems about Arthur and his knights.
6. I loved the Fionovar Tapestry! I'd completely forgotten about those books, and I will be rereading them very soon now. Speaking of that, what are you currently reading?
The Gunslinger, by Stephen King.
Thanks so much for having me here today!
