Top Ten Books Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing This Year

1. Princess of Thorns by Stacey Jay

Game of Thrones meets the Grimm's fairy tales in this twisted, fast-paced romantic fantasy-adventure about Sleeping Beauty's daughter, a warrior princess who must fight to reclaim her throne.

Though she looks like a mere mortal, Princess Aurora is a fairy blessed with enhanced strength, bravery, and mercy yet cursed to destroy the free will of any male who kisses her. Disguised as a boy, she enlists the help of the handsome but also cursed Prince Niklaas to fight legions of evil and free her brother from the ogre queen who stole Aurora's throne ten years ago.

Will Aurora triumph over evil and reach her brother before it's too late? Can Aurora and Niklaas break the curses that will otherwise forever keep them from finding their one true love?

2. Stitching Snow by R.C. Lewis

Princess Snow is missing.

Her home planet is filled with violence and corruption at the hands of King Matthias and his wife as they attempt to punish her captors. The king will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter back—but that’s assuming she wants to return at all.

Essie has grown used to being cold. Temperatures on the planet Thanda are always sub-zero, and she fills her days with coding and repairs for the seven loyal drones that run the local mines.

When a mysterious young man named Dane crash-lands near her home, Essie agrees to help the pilot repair his ship. But soon she realizes that Dane’s arrival was far from accidental, and she’s pulled into the heart of a war she’s risked everything to avoid. With the galaxy’s future—and her own—in jeopardy, Essie must choose who to trust in a fiery fight for survival.

3. Thief's Covenant (Widdershins Adventures #1) by Ari Marmell

Once she was Adrienne Satti. An orphan of Davillon, she had somehow escaped destitution and climbed to the ranks of the city's aristocracy in a rags-to-riches story straight from an ancient fairy tale. Until one horrid night, when a conspiracy of forces--human and other--stole it all away in a flurry of blood and murder. Today she is Widdershins, a thief making her way through Davillon's underbelly with a sharp blade, a sharper wit, and the mystical aid of Olgun, a foreign god with no other worshippers but Widdershins herself. It's not a great life, certainly nothing compared to the one she once had, but it's hers.

But now, in the midst of Davillon's political turmoil, an array of hands are once again rising up against her, prepared to tear down all that she's built. The City Guard wants her in prison. Members of her own Guild want her dead. And something horrid, something dark, something ancient is reaching out for her, a past that refuses to let her go.

Widdershins and Olgun are going to find answers, and justice, for what happened to her--but only if those who almost destroyed her in those years gone by don't finish the job first.

4. The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer #3) by Michelle Hodkin

Mara Dyer wants to believe there's more to the lies she’s been told.
There is.

She doesn’t stop to think about where her quest for the truth might lead.
She should.

She never had to imagine how far she would go for vengeance.
She will now.

Loyalties are betrayed, guilt and innocence tangle, and fate and chance collide in this shocking conclusion to Mara Dyer’s story.

Retribution has arrived.

5. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2: Angela (Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel NOW!) #2) by Brian Michael Bendis, Sara Pichelli and Francessco Francavilla

Gamora, one of the galaxy's greatest warriors, holds a deadly secret that could bring down the entire team. And when Gamora battles Angela, the entire universe hangs in the balance! Then, the galaxy's most mismatched heroes find themselves at a crossroads when the effects of Infinity begin to rise. Can even the mysterious Angela's power help combat the fallout from Thanos' master plan? And what will it take for Star-Lord to betray the entire Marvel Universe? The biggest blockbuster hit of the year continues as critically acclaimed artists Sara Pichelli and Francesco Francavilla climb aboard...and comics legend Neil Gaiman joins the team in this one-of-a-kind comic book event!

Collects Guardians of the Galaxy (2013) #4-9

I just bought Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1: Cosmic Avengers because I loved the Guardians of the Galaxy movie and really enjoyed the Guardians' parts in the new Captain Marvel series. So, as soon as I read it, I'll want to start on the second volume. Plus, this one has Neil Gaiman!

6. The Wicked + The Divine #6 by Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie and Matt Wilson

I read and loved the first five issues of The Wicked + The Divine, so I can't wait to read the next issue. You can read my review of the collected first five issuesHERE.

7. Journey into Mystery: Issues 622-645 by Kieron Gillen

The shadow of Fear Itself looms over Asgard, and only Loki holds the key to stopping the impending war between Odin's army and the Serpent! With Thor imprisoned by the All-Father, and the rest of Asgard mistrustful of the young reincarnation of the god of mischief, Loki takes what help he can get from his new avian advisor Ikol, the undead Tyr, God of Battles, and a bloodthirsty Hel wolf, and journeys to the underworld. There he hopes to best the Serpent's devious machinations and undermine the god of fear's plan for world domination. But ever the trickster, when it comes to Loki, nothing is as it seems!

After I finished the first five issues of The Wicked + The Divine, I started researching what else Kieron Gillen had written. I saw that he was writing a series based on Angela, Thor's sister (Angela: Asgard's Assasin). Gillen says that Angela's story builds on a thread in Journey Into Mystery: Everything Burns, which collects issues 642-645, so I need to read that series, too.

8. Queen of Someday (Stolen Empire #1) by Sherry D. Ficklin

ONE GIRL WILL BRING AN EMPIRE TO ITS KNEES...

Before she can become the greatest empress in history, fifteen-year-old Sophie will have to survive her social-climbing mother’s quest to put her on the throne of Russia—at any cost.

Imperial Court holds dangers like nothing Sophie has ever faced before. In the heart of St. Petersburg, surviving means navigating the political, romantic, and religious demands of the bitter Empress Elizabeth and her handsome, but sadistic nephew, Peter. Determined to save her impoverished family—and herself—Sophie vows to do whatever is necessary to thrive in her new surroundings. But an attempt on her life and an unexpected attraction threatens to derail her plans.

Alone in a new and dangerous world, learning who to trust and who to charm may mean the difference between becoming queen and being sent home in shame to marry her lecherous uncle. With traitors and murderers lurking around every corner, her very life hangs in the balance. Betrothed to one man but falling in love with another, Sophie will need to decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice in order to become the empress she is destined to be.

In a battle for the soul of a nation, will love or destiny reign supreme?

9. Amazon gift card

I use all the Amazon gift cards I get for Christmas, birthday, etc. to pre-order all the books I want. It's supposed to stop me from buying any books, but it never does.

10. Audible gift membership

I can never have too many Audible credits.

  1. Something to stop us buying books? NEVER! (Except maybe going back to school.)

It looks like you have some fun titles on that list! And you reminded me I really need to get around to reading Thief's Covenant. It's been on my shelf for quite a while. And I am sensing a snowball effect with the comics (i.e., reading one leads you to other titles you must try)? Great list!

    1. I blame the snowballs of comics on Neil Gaiman. Once I read Sandman, I wanted to read all the comics that had ever been compared to his.

And even a tiny apartment with one bookshelf doesn't stop me from buying books. That's what storage and kindles are for, right? :)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Great list! I've been meaning to read Journey Into Mystery under Loki's character as it looks like he has some intriguing adventures. And I should also follow up on GotG; I picked up the first volume before the movie came out and I really enjoyed it :) Hope some of these books & book-related items end up under your Christmas tree in a few days ;)
