Top Ten Tuesday: Goals for 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

My Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2015

1. Read more books than I read in 2014

I kind of failed miserably at this in 2014. In 2013, I read 303 books, but in 2014 I have only read 273 so far. In 2015, I will try for only one more than in 2014.

2. Read more books out of my normal comfort zones

Normally, I'm a fantasy reader with a little bit of horror and science fiction thrown in. This year I have found some series I loved in the other genres, and I really need to branch out more.

3. Read more classics/award winners

I set a goal to read one classic, modern classic or award winning book a month this year. Although they weren't the original books, I tried to read, and I had a few classics that I put down, I did manage to read 12 classics or awards winners this year. I'll try for one a month again next year and hope I make it.

4. Read more diverse books or books about or by minorities

I generally read more female authors than male authors, but I also need to actively search for even more diversity - more black authors or characters, more GLBT authors and characters, more authors and characters not of the Christian faith, etc.

5. Conquer my physical TBR

This year I added a lot of books to my shelves that have not gotten read. Maybe 2015 will be the year of no physical book left unread!

6. Conquer my virtual TBR

There is probably no chance that I'll read all the books on my kindle, but I at least need to cut down the size of the unread portion.

7. Review more books that I read spontaneously

My reading experience is very different for books I plan to review than for books I am reading for my own pleasure. I take notes for review books, and I am actively looking for things I like and dislike. Which means, that very few of the books that I read for pleasure get reviewed, but they are normally the books I end up liking the best. I need to at least write out my thoughts on these books so that when I go back years later, I can remember why I liked or disliked those books.

8. Review more books from the review pile

I was warned not to do it, but my literature eyes were bigger than my plate could hold. I requested way more books from NetGalley and Edelweiss than I could review and need to work on getting all of those books reviewed this year.

9. Reduce the number of books I check out from the library

Apparently, I didn't learn anything in 2014, because this was on last year's list as well. I can't read all the books I check out, yet I keep checking out all the books, then renewing them until I HAVE to bring them back. As I'm writing this, I have three books that I cannot renew again and are overdue...

10. Conquer the books that intimidate me

I feel like I've put one tiny toe in the Stephen King pool. I've only read The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower #1) and The Long Walk (Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman). I need to read at least one more of the more well-known King novels like It or The Shining.

There are also many books that I haven't picked up because there is so much hype or I'm just scared that I won't like it or get it. I haven't picked up 1984, partly because it is one of THE dystopian novels, but also because I've heard that it is extremely depressing, and I don't do well with depressing novels.

  1. #5 & #6 are definitely on the priority list this year. I know I can be pretty bad in stacking up on the TBR pile but I was surprised to see how much I bought this year alone :3

Best of luck with your resolutions next year :) Happy New Year! My TTT

  2. I think an overflowing TBR is a natural consequence of being a reader. :) Thanks for stopping by! Happy New Year!

  3. Reading more books outside of my comfort zone, plus ten classics, is on my list of resolutions for 2015 too! I'm also hoping to at least cut my TBR pile (the physical one especially) down by at least half but looking at all of the books I have, I don't think that's very likely...even better though if by some miracle I could totally clear them all out. But that's just living in my own fantasy novel there. xD

    Good luck with your goals!
