Top Ten Tuesday: New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2014

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2014

1. Meljean Brook
Author of the Iron Seas series

Meljean Brook is now in my top favorite authors. Her Iron Seas series is one of the best steampunk series I have ever read. I am kicking myself for waiting until this year to try out her writing.

2. Jenn Bennett
Author of the Arcadia Bell series

Jenn Bennett is another author I am kicking myself for not reading before this year. Let's just go ahead and assume that if an author had a book out before this year, I should have read it way before this year. Bennett's Arcadia Bell series is one of my favorite urban fantasy/paranormal romance series. You can read my review of Binding the Shadows (Arcadia Bell #3) HERE.

3. Kelly Sue DeConnick
Comic book author

My brother bought me the first couple of issues in the second volume of DeConnick's Captain Marvel Marvel Now series after I got so excited that Marvel announced Captain Marvel will be the first female led movie. I immediately bought the rest that were out, then ordered a subscription through Marvel to get the newest issues as they release. Then I bought the first two collections in the first volume. The only reason I haven't bought everything else that DeConnick has ever written (I really want to read her Pretty Deadly series, too) is that I need to exercise some modicum of self control.

4. A.C. Gaughen
Author of the Scarlet trilogy

I hated Scarlet the first time I tried to read it, but I LOVED it when I tried the audio. I just can't take written dialect. Now, I can't wait until the third in the trilogy comes out on May 19, 2015. You can read my review of ScarletHERE.

5. Sara Raasch
Author of Snow Like Ashes

I loved Raasch's debut Snow Like Ashes. You can read my review HERE and Kayla's review HERE.

6. Kameron Hurley
Author of The Mirror Empire (Worldbreaker Saga #1)

I had been interesting in reading Hurley's works because her blog posts and articles are always interesting and well-written. Also, she's a women writing sci-fi/fantasy with strong female characters. I really enjoyed The Mirror Empire, and will be picking up her Bel Dame Apocrypha series soon.

7. Erika Johansen
Author of The Queen of the Tearling

This is another debut that I loved. I can't wait to see what they do with the movie, as well. You can read my review HERE and Kayla's review HERE.

8. Mary E. Pearson
Author of The Kiss of Deception (The Remnant Chronicles #1)

This is another YA fantasy that I loved this year. I still need to read Pearson's other series, Jenna Fox Chronicles. You can read my review HERE and Kayla's review HERE.

9. Pierce Brown
Author of the Red Rising Trilogy

With the over-saturation of dystopians over the past couple of years, Red Rising still managed to stand out. Kayla said she really enjoyed the sequel, Golden Son, as well. It's on my TBR right now and we will hopefully doing a joint review soon. You can read Kayla's review of Red Rising HERE.

10. Max Gladstone
Author of Three Parts Dead (Craft Sequence #1)

I LOVED Three Parts Dead when I finished it last week. I can't wait to get started on the next one, Two Serpents Rise. I will also have a review (aka gushing) of Three Parts Dead up soon.

  1. I was actually pondering some time ago where I first heard of Kameron Hurley as her name sounded familiar; then I realised she's written articles here and there and I've probably read a few in the past, lol. Looking forward to getting around to The Mirror Empire--hopefully next year! xD Great list :)
