Title: To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis
Author:
Andra Watkins
Publisher: World Hermit Press
Release Date: March 1, 2014

Is remembrance immortality? Nobody wants to be forgotten, least of all the famous.

Meriwether Lewis lived a memorable life. He and William Clark were the first white men to reach the Pacific in their failed attempt to discover a Northwest Passage. Much celebrated upon their return, Lewis was appointed governor of the vast Upper Louisiana Territory and began preparing his eagerly-anticipated journals for publication. But his re-entry into society proved as challenging as his journey. Battling financial and psychological demons and faced with mounting pressure from Washington, Lewis set out on a pivotal trip to the nation’s capital in September 1809. His mission: to publish his journals and salvage his political career. He never made it. He died in a roadside inn on the Natchez Trace in Tennessee from one gunshot to the head and another to the abdomen.

Was it suicide or murder? His mysterious death tainted his legacy and his fame quickly faded. Merry’s own memory of his death is fuzzy at best. All he knows is he’s fallen into Nowhere, where his only shot at redemption lies in the fate of rescuing another. An ill-suited “guardian angel,” Merry comes to in the same New Orleans bar after twelve straight failures. Now, with one drink and a two-dollar bill he is sent on his last assignment, his final shot at escape from the purgatory in which he’s been dwelling for almost 200 years. Merry still believes he can reverse his forgotten fortunes.

Nine-year-old Emmaline Cagney is the daughter of French Quarter madam and a Dixieland bass player. When her mother wins custody in a bitter divorce, Emmaline carves out her childhood among the ladies of Bourbon Street. Bounced between innocence and immorality, she struggles to find her safe haven, even while her mother makes her open her dress and serve tea to grown men.

It isn’t until Emmaline finds the strange cards hidden in her mother’s desk that she realizes why these men are visiting: her mother has offered to sell her to the highest bidder. To escape a life of prostitution, she slips away during a police raid on her mother’s bordello, desperate to find her father in Nashville.

Merry’s fateful two-dollar bill leads him to Emmaline as she is being chased by the winner of her mother’s sick card game: The Judge. A dangerous Nowhere Man convinced that Emmaline is the reincarnation of his long dead wife, Judge Wilkinson is determined to possess her, to tease out his wife’s spirit and marry her when she is ready. That Emmaline is now guarded by Meriwether Lewis, his bitter rival in life, further stokes his obsessive rage.

To elude the Judge, Em and Merry navigate the Mississippi River to Natchez. They set off on an adventure along the storied Natchez Trace, where they meet Cajun bird watchers, Elvis-crooning Siamese twins, War of 1812 re-enactors, Spanish wild boar hunters and ancient mound dwellers. Are these people their allies? Or pawns of the perverted, powerful Judge?

After a bloody confrontation with the Judge at Lewis’s grave, Merry and Em limp into Nashville and discover her father at the Parthenon. Just as Merry wrestles with the specter of success in his mission to deliver Em, The Judge intercedes with renewed determination to win Emmaline, waging a final battle for her soul. Merry vanquishes the Judge and earns his redemption. As his spirit fuses with the body of Em’s living father, Merry discovers that immortality lives within the salvation of another, not the remembrance of the multitude.

Blog Tour (Review & Giveaway): Dark Aemilia by Sally O'Reilly

Title: Dark Aemilia: A Novel of Shakespeare’s Dark Lady
Author:
Sally O'Reilly
Publisher: Picador (Macmillan)
Release Date: May 27, 2014
Acquired Via: Historical Fiction Blog Tours

A TALE OF SORCERY AND PASSION IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY LONDON—WHERE WITCHES HAUNT WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE AND HIS DARK LADY, THE PLAYWRIGHT'S MUSE AND ONE TRUE LOVE

The daughter of a Venetian musician, Aemilia Bassano came of age in Queen Elizabeth’s royal court. The Queen’s favorite, she develops a love of poetry and learning, maturing into a young woman known not only for her beauty but also her sharp mind and quick tongue. Aemilia becomes the mistress of Lord Hunsdon, but her position is precarious. Then she crosses paths with an impetuous playwright named William Shakespeare and begins an impassioned but ill-fated affair.

A decade later, the Queen is dead, and Aemilia Bassano is now Aemilia Lanyer, fallen from favor and married to a fool. Like the rest of London, she fears the plague. And when her young son Henry takes ill, Aemilia resolves to do anything to save him, even if it means seeking help from her estranged lover, Will—or worse, making a pact with the Devil himself.

In rich, vivid detail, Sally O’Reilly breathes life into England’s first female poet, a mysterious woman nearly forgotten by history. Full of passion and devilish schemes, Dark Aemilia is a tale worthy of the Bard.

Selected by O, The Oprah Magazine as one of 17 Books You Won’t Be Able To Put Down!

My Review

I have never read anything by Aemilia Lanyer that I can recall, but I was interested in Sally O'Reilly's Dark Aemilia because of the Elizabethan setting. While I enjoyed the setting and Aemilia as a character, I must warn you that the book had some fairly graphic scenes that I found difficult to read.

Title: The Tapestry (Joanna Stafford #3)
Author:
Nancy Bilyeau
Publisher: Touchstone (Simon & Schuster)
Release Date: March 15, 2015

In The Crown, Sister Joanna Stafford searched for a Dark Ages relic that could save her priory from Cromwell’s advancing army of destruction. In The Chalice, Joanna was drawn into an international conspiracy against Henry VIII himself as she struggled to learn the truth behind a prophecy of his destruction.

Now, in The Tapestry, Joanna Stafford finally chooses her own destiny.

After her Dominican priory in Dartford closed forever—collateral damage in tyrannical King Henry VIII’s quest to overthrow the Catholic Church—Joanna resolves to live a quiet and honorable life weaving tapestries, shunning dangerous quests and conspiracies. Until she is summoned to Whitehall Palace, where her tapestry weaving has drawn the King’s attention.

Joanna is uncomfortable serving the King, and fears for her life in a court bursting with hidden agendas and a casual disregard for the virtues she holds dear. Her suspicions are confirmed when an assassin attempts to kill her moments after arriving at Whitehall.

Struggling to stay ahead of her most formidable enemy yet, an unknown one, she becomes entangled in dangerous court politics. Her dear friend Catherine Howard is rumored to be the King’s mistress. Joanna is determined to protect young, beautiful, naïve Catherine from becoming the King’s next wife and, possibly, victim.

Set in a world of royal banquets and feasts, tournament jousts, ship voyages, and Tower Hill executions, this thrilling tale finds Joanna in her most dangerous situation yet, as she attempts to decide the life she wants to live: nun or wife, spy or subject, rebel or courtier. Joanna Stafford must finally choose.

Cover Thoughts

The publisher has gone more toward the style of The Crown for The Tapestry with having just one dominant color. Red isn't my favorite color, but the style is beautiful. I won't be running out to buy the book on the cover alone, but I've had my eye on the series for a while. I would love to hear what fans of the series think of the cover.

What do you think about the cover of The Tapestry?

Sarah Fine has been on my radar for a long time, but something always captures my attention before I quite get to her books. I know her most recent Of Metal and Wishes is getting a lot of positive reviews. Also, Kayla really liked her joint book with Walter Jury, Scan. (You can read her review HERE.) Sanctum is going to be my book borrowed from the Kindle Lending Library this month, and it's looking like Marked will also be available to borrow when it releases.

What are you waiting on this week?

Personal Collection

Catherine is powerless to stop them, but with the French defeat at the Battle of Agincourt, the tables turn and suddenly her currency has never been higher. But can Mette protect Catherine from forces at court who seek to harm her or will her loyalty to Catherine place her in even greater danger?

My Review

The Agincourt Bride is a historical fiction novel by Joanna Hickson that chronicles the life of Catherine de Valois from her birth to her crossing to England, as "told" by her nursemaid, Mette. I bought this book on my Kindle and Audible accounts ages ago because I was interested by the premise, but I must admit it was getting on this tour that pushed me to get to reading it sooner than I would have otherwise.

September is for Sequels #Giveaway Hop

Welcome to my stop on the September is for Sequels Giveaway Hop hosted by the wonderful Lisa at Lisa Loves Literature and Kathy at I Am A Reader, Not A Writer. I recently read and loved The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey, and I'm incredibly excited about the sequel that is coming out on September 16th!

What You Can Win

The riveting follow-up to the New York Times bestselling The 5th Wave, hailed by Justin Cronin as “wildly entertaining.”

How do you rid the Earth of seven billion humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

Surviving the first four waves was nearly impossible. Now Cassie Sullivan finds herself in a new world, a world in which the fundamental trust that binds us together is gone. As the 5th Wave rolls across the landscape, Cassie, Ben, and Ringer are forced to confront the Others’ ultimate goal: the extermination of the human race.

Cassie and her friends haven’t seen the depths to which the Others will sink, nor have the Others seen the heights to which humanity will rise, in the ultimate battle between life and death, hope and despair, love and hate.

Top Ten Tuesday: Authors That Would Be Sitting at My Lunch Table

Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.

Top Five Authors That Would Be Sitting at My Lunch Table

I am going to change this one up a little bit this week since I already did a favorite characters Top Ten a few months. This will be the authors that I would be best friends with in an alternate reality.

1. Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is probably my favorite author. Not only is he a fantastic fantasy writer, but he's also a really awesome person. After I read my first Gaiman novel, The Graveyard Book, I stumbled upon Gaiman's blog. Hours and tears and laughter later, I decided I wanted to read anything and everything Gaiman had ever thought about writing. He's also friends with insanely cool people too, like George R. R. Martin (he challenged Martin to the Ice Bucket Challenge and both are really funny to watch).

2. Ilona Andrews

Husband and wife writing duo, Ilona and Gordon, are my next favorite authors. The Kate Daniels series is hands-down my favorite urban fantasy series ever. Kate is one of the most hysterically sarcastic characters. And the writing really carries over into their blog.
