Top Ten Tuesday: Authors That Would Be Sitting at My Lunch Table

Top Five Authors That Would Be Sitting at My Lunch Table

I am going to change this one up a little bit this week since I already did a favorite characters Top Ten a few months. This will be the authors that I would be best friends with in an alternate reality.

1. Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman is probably my favorite author. Not only is he a fantastic fantasy writer, but he's also a really awesome person. After I read my first Gaiman novel, The Graveyard Book, I stumbled upon Gaiman's blog. Hours and tears and laughter later, I decided I wanted to read anything and everything Gaiman had ever thought about writing. He's also friends with insanely cool people too, like George R. R. Martin (he challenged Martin to the Ice Bucket Challenge and both are really funny to watch).

2. Ilona Andrews

Husband and wife writing duo, Ilona and Gordon, are my next favorite authors. The Kate Daniels series is hands-down my favorite urban fantasy series ever. Kate is one of the most hysterically sarcastic characters. And the writing really carries over into their blog.

Top Ten Tuesday: Television Shows

Top Ten Television Shows

1. Sex and the City

I can't believe it has been 10 years since this show has ended. The clothes and hair styles may be dated, but the issues the friends had are not. Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and and Miranda may not have been the best friends to each other, but they were there for each other and had each other's backs. By the way, I was always Team Aidan, and I didn't like Big until the movie. How odd is that? I've seen every episode multiple times; of course, it helps that I own all of the seasons.

2. Charmed

Cheesy, silly and terrible special effects, but I LOVE this show. Watching this helped me get through studying in law school and for the bar exam. Charmed may have started my obsession with witchy fiction.

Top Ten Tuesday: Classics

Top Ten Classics

I Have Read:

1. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

My introduction to witty Austen books and my all time favorite book, let alone classic.

2. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

I've always heard that people either like Jane Eyre OR Wuthering Heights, and I've come to believe it. I loved Jane Eyre, but it took me the better part of a year and many failed attempts to read Wuthering Heights. I mean, I tried print, audio AND ebook version and FINALLY got through it. Anyone else read both and love one and hate the other?

Top Ten Book Cover Trends

I Like:

1. Girls in Dresses on Historical Romance Novels

This is so much better than half-naked men and women who, more often than not, are making odd faces.

2. Covers That Actually Depict Scenes in the Book

Top Ten Books That Should Be in Your Beach Bag

1. Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen

A light YA contemporary set on the beach - perfect beach read. Almost any Sarah Dessen book is the perfect beach read, but I picked this one just because it is set on the beach.

2. One for the Money (Stephanie Plum #1) by Janet Evanovich

Light, hilarious with a touch of mystery. Plus, Lorelei King is one of the best narrators, and I can't imagine reading this series any other way.

Top Ten Books If You Like This TV Show or Movie

1. The Face of Deception (Eve Duncan #1) and Bones

One of the first things I remember thinking about the TV show Bones was that one of the characters, Angela, reminded me of the Eve Duncan series. It's been a really long time since I've read the series since I read it in high school, but I remember loving it. Eve is a forensic sculptor who reconstructs the skulls of deceased people for identification purposes. Angela does a similar job but with more technology and less putty.

2. First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson #1) by Darynda Jones and One for the Money

Charley Davidson is pretty much the paranormal version of Stephanie Plum. Stephanie is a little more accident prone and spastic, while Charley is a little more snarky and absent minded. And while Stephanie is a bounty hunter, Charley is a private eye with a little help from the other side.

Top Ten Bookish Things (That Aren't Books) That I Would Like to Own

1. More Bookshelves!

One can never have too many bookshelves, correct?

2. Book Map

How awesome is this!?! A map full of literary places...I want it so badly! Too bad I don't have even an ounce of wall space left in my apartment. :(

Top Ten Tuesday: Most Unique Books I Have Ever Read

Top Ten Most Unique Books I Have Ever Read

This week was really hard for me, because there are so many books and ideas currently floating around that it is hard to find something truly original. I mean, supposedly there are only 7 basic plots in literature and these plots just keep getting reused over and again. So, I tried to find books that were unique for at least one reason, even if I didn’t love the book and even if some parts or the rest of the book aren’t as original.

1. The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking #1) by Patrick Ness

I thought that the concept of the "noise" was pretty unique. Only men's thoughts are released into the "noise", and while women can hear the "noise", their thoughts are not released into the "noise."

2. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

This was unique in that the narrator is Death.

Top Ten Things on My Bookish Bucket List

1. Meet Neil Gaiman

Or at least go to one his shows/talks. I would also love to get a signed book by him.

2. Go to BEA or Other Book Conference

3. Read 304 Books This Year

Although I don’t think this one is going to happen. I’ve been a bad reader this year (I’m blaming my brand-new obsession with the t.v. show Bones), and Goodreads is telling me that I’m 15 books behind. Well, at least last year was a stellar book reading year when I read 303 books.

Top Ten Books on My Spring 2014 TBR List

1. Ruins (Partials Sequence #3) by Dan Wells

This was released on March 11, 2014, and I used my Audible credit for this month to download the audiobook. I am so excited to finish this Dystopian series!

2. Hexed (The Witch Hunter #1) by Michelle Krys

I love reading about witches; they're probably my top fantasy characters. So, when I saw this described as The Craft meets Bring It On, I was sold. I received a review copy from NetGalley and I can't wait to get started.

The book/series that began my love affair with young adult fantasy.

2. Graceling (Graceling Realm #1) by Kristin Cashore

Katsa and Po are two of my favorite fantasy characters. This is the book I recommend to anyone that has the tiniest of interest in fantasy.

Top Ten Books That I Can't Believe I Have Never Read

This week is a rewind where we pick from past topics. I'm choosing books I have never read because I thought it would be fun, and it might make me actually read then sooner rather than later.

1. 1984 by George Orwell

This book is one of the reasons that I started to read classics last year. I just have never gotten around to it. I'm kind of intimidated. I even own it on audiobook and physical copy. It is definitely on my to-do list this year. If I could just actually start to read it...

2. Little Women (Little Women #1)
by Louisa May Alcott
I have no excuses, but I do plan on reading it this year.

Top Ten Reasons We Love Being a Blogger/Reader

Amber's Picks:

Reading:

1. I Get to Visit Different Worlds

Or, I get to live different lives and experience things I would otherwise not have a chance to do. One of my favorite quotes from George R. R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons :
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies," said Jojen. "The man who never reads lives only one.”

2. I Get to Lose Myself in Books

I am always thinking or worrying about something. Reading is the only time that I truly let go and immerse myself in something that stops my constant whirring of thoughts.

Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2014

1. Read 304 Books in 2014

In 2013, I read 303 books, so I would like to read one more book than last year.

2. Read One Classic a Month

This will be helped along by Kayla’s and my participation in the Back to the Classics Challenge 2014 hosted by Books and Chocolate. We are starting this month with Night by Elie Wiesel. We have 6 categories that we must read, and then if we complete those, another 5 optional categories. Are you doing this challenge? Are you doing other challenges? Let us know in the comments!

3. Read One Award-Winning Book a Month

This is my own personal challenge. I’m starting this month with Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein which won several awards including being a Printz Honor Book. If you have any other great award winning novels that I need to read, let me know in the comments!

4. Finish Series That I Started

Top Ten(ish) Books I Read in 2013

1. Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas

This is one of my favorite series and Calaena is one of my favorite heroines. This is also the series I probably push on my bookish friends the most. When I first picked up Throne of Glass last year, I was completely blown away at how it good it was. Surprisingly, Crown of Midnight might have been even better.

Top Ten Books I Wouldn't Mind Santa Bringing Me

1. Dangerous Women edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner R. Dozois

This has a lot of great authors – my have-to-reads on the list are George R. R. Martin, Jim Butcher and Brandon Sanderson.

2. Shadowdance (Darkest London #4) by Kristen Callihan

Callihan’s Darkest London series is one of my favorite series. It is a mix between steampunk, urban fantasy and paranormal romance.
