Top Ten "Gateway" Books/Authors on My Reading Journey

Horror

1. Welcome to Dead House by R.L. Stine

and

2. Edgar Allen Poe

Mystery

3. The Secret of the Old Clock (Nancy Drew #1) by Carolyn Keene

Romance

4. Johanna Lindsey

I still have fond memories of my first bodice-ripper/historical romances.

Science Fiction

5. The Invasion (Animorphs #1) by K.A. Applegate

Classics

6. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Urban Fantasy

7. Dead Until Dark (Sookie Stackhouse #1) by Charlaine Harris

Steampunk

8. Soulless (Parasol Protectorate #1) by Gail Carriger

I didn't even really know that Steampunk was a thing until I read some of the reviews after reading this book. It is still my favorite Steampunk story, but I have found some other great books in this genre, too.

New Adult

9. Easy by Tammara Webber

Young Adult

10. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter #1) by J.K. Rowling

This series is one of the first Young Adult series I read as an adult, and the one that convinced me I needed to read more of the genre.
