Interview

Kayla: Hi Whitney, thank you so much for stopping back by Bibliophilia, Please allowing me to ask you a few questions. To start us off, I would like to congratulate you on being nominated for a Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in a First Novel for The Violet Hour. How did you find out about your nomination?

Whitney A. Miller: Thank you! It was really exciting to be on the long list for the Bram Stoker. I’m an active member of the Horror Writers Association so I knew the list was coming out, but didn’t know I’d been nominated until I saw some congratulatory tweets! Twitter is how I found out most of my exciting book info, and this was no exception. :-)

Kayla: Can you tell us a little bit about The Violet Hour? Should we read it before The Crimson Gate?

Whitney: Sure! The Violet Hour is the first installment in Harlow Wintergreen’s saga (I’d definitely recommend reading it first, though I tried to write it so you don’t have to). In TVH, we experience what life is like inside the creepy megacult VisionCrest, which Harlow’s father founded. As the daughter of the Patriarch, everyone expects Harlow to be perfect. But when she begins to hear a sinister voice in her head that commands her to kill and shows her visions of a blood-soaked alternate reality, her sanity starts to unravel. TVH takes readers on a spooky thrill-ride across Asia as Harlow battles against the voice in her head and discovers some unfortunate truths about who she is and where she comes from that could endanger not only her and everyone she loves, but the entire world.

Kayla: What is your favorite development that came along in the series that wasn’t originally there?

Whitney: The endings of both The Violet Hour and The Crimson Gate. I don’t want to give anything away but they are both a little...unexpected. However, neither one originally ended the way they do now. Thank goodness for revision!

Kayla: What do you think sets The Violet Hour and The Crimson Gate apart from other young adult novels?

Whitney: A lot of reviewers have said that they can’t really fit the series into one category, which I really like. It’s equal parts horror, sci-fi, thriller, and adventure. I think (I hope!) that makes it really unique.

Kayla: Will there be any more books about Harlow and VisionCrest after The Crimson Gate?

Whitney: I think The Crimson Gate will be the last book, though you never know. One thing I love about horror is that you get to leave an unfinished chord. I think of it as a darkened doorway that’s open just enough to let a little slant of light through. There’s always the possibility of more menace on the horizon!

Kayla: Do you have any other upcoming works we can look forward to reading?

Whitney: I’m working on two different things right now, and I hope you’ll see more from me in the very near future. Stay tuned!

Kayla: Thank you for your time! You're welcome to come back whenever!

Whitney: Thank you – you’re awesome and so are your readers!
