Bibliophilia, Please Blogoversary 3: Day 5

31 comments:

Once again, and quite surprisingly, we are passing another annual benchmark here at Bibliophilia, Please. From what started as a one (wo)man lovefest for Kevin Hearne and the great YA Kayla stumbled upon in 2011 has evolved into two well-educated, eloquent, and magnificent women sharing and reviewing the books they love. And then, of course, there is Kayla. (Will is, unfortunately, still missing.)

Be sure to check out the previous days to see how 2014 was for Janelle, Amber, and Kayla; enter the giveaways on Tuesday and Thursday; and maybe see a special guest post from an up-and-coming author.

Amber

This has been a really busy year for me, personally and professionally, so sometimes my reading has really fallen by the wayside. This is my first full year as a reviewer, and I have really learned a lot, including a lot about my reading tastes, in that year.

I applied for the reviewer position with Bibliophilia, Please, because I had been playing with the idea of starting my own blog for about a year to six month prior. I was just scared to start it on my own. I wanted to talk about all the books I loved with people (my friends either don't read as much as I do, or give me crazy looks when I am pushing the next book YOU HAVE TO READ RIGHT NOW). In my head, blogging was this big space where everyone was always discussing all the great books, and by discussing I mean, leaving back and forth comments. In reality, not so much. I guess I should have realized this earlier, because no one really comments on my Amazon, Goodreads or Shelfari reviews either. And those comments aren't ever really conducive to conversation. (Side note: I need to comment on other reviews that help me find books). So, my favorite reviews are generally when Kayla and I read the same book, then email each other in exclamation points about how great it is, then Kayla somehow manages to make them look like a review.

Bibliophilia, Please Blogoversary 3: Day 1

Janelle

2014 was a busy year for me. I graduated college and became the first person in my immediate family to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree. I sent my 13-year-old to Europe for three weeks. I had back surgery, then starting working from home full-time. I attended a writing conference and pitched agents my YA contemporary novel. I published two poems, one in an anthology that now sits proudly on my bookshelf, swished in between books by my favorite authors. I started my website, discovered Tumblr, and uploaded YouTube videos (although I have to admit I watch more than I make). I started back to school, working my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults.

I also joined Bibliophilia, Please because reading books has always been a constant part in my life. This year I read an eclectic mix of mostly young adult books. Grasshopper Jungle (I thought it was about THORNY grasshoppers), Code Name Verity, and The Truth about Alice all came as recommendations from my writing conference. My YA novel contains a gay character so I read Beautiful Music for Ugly Children, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, and Two Boys Kissing to learn more about gay and transgender characters. I read award finalists and winners like The Surrender Tree, Speak, and Brown Girl Dreaming. I even read non-fiction like The Opposite of Loneliness and The Port Chicago 50. For school I read Esperanza Rising, The Raft, and The Ocean at the End of the Lane.

I think The Truth About Alice and Speak were two of my favorites because they were about such emotional topics. The Truth About Alice is a must read for my 13-year-old son before he's allowed on any date (including a dance), and I already forced him to sit through the movie Speak (starring a young Kristen Stewart and based on the book). I think those were the two stories that had the most impact on me personally and really made me stop and think about what goes on in life.

I am very excited to see what 2015 brings. Reading and writing are such a large part of my life and I am so honored to share my thoughts and feelings on those topics here with you.

Top Ten Books I Have Read So Far This Year

1. Scarlet (Scarlet #1) by A.C. Gaughen

This is definitely the best book I've read so far this year, especially considering I almost didn't read it. To get over the dialect, I listened to the audiobook, and the book is just amazing. You can read my review HERE

2. Code Name Verity (Code Name Verity #1) by Elizabeth Wein

This was such a great story of friendship set against the background of World War II.

Top Ten Bookish Goals for 2014

1. Read 304 Books in 2014

In 2013, I read 303 books, so I would like to read one more book than last year.

2. Read One Classic a Month

This will be helped along by Kayla’s and my participation in the Back to the Classics Challenge 2014 hosted by Books and Chocolate. We are starting this month with Night by Elie Wiesel. We have 6 categories that we must read, and then if we complete those, another 5 optional categories. Are you doing this challenge? Are you doing other challenges? Let us know in the comments!

3. Read One Award-Winning Book a Month

This is my own personal challenge. I’m starting this month with Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein which won several awards including being a Printz Honor Book. If you have any other great award winning novels that I need to read, let me know in the comments!

4. Finish Series That I Started

Top Ten Books on My Winter TBR

1. Fables and Reflections (The Sandman Volume 6) by Neil Gaiman

I will read anything written by Neil Gaiman (seriously, even his speeches make me tear up sometimes!), and Sandman is said to be one of the top graphic novels ever published. So far, I agree whole-heartedly. It is dark and gritty and pure amazing.

2. A Dance with Dragons (A Song of Ice and Fire #5) by George R.R. Martin

I have been putting off reading this one as book 6 hasn’t been released and there is no release date in sight! (No, I am not whining that George R. R. Martin takes forever to release books. As Neil Gaiman so eloquently put it – George R. R. Martin is not my bitch :-). I am however scared that I will forget everything that happens in A Dance with Dragons when book 6 is finally released. But with the show not on until next year, I need some Tyrion Lannister in my life, so I’m thinking this will be read in pretty short order.
