Behind-the-scenes secrets could turn deadly for Desmond and Riley.

Life in the Heights has never been easy for seventeen-year-old Riley Frost, but when she's publicly dumped and outed at the same time, she becomes an immediate social outcast at her high school. So Riley swears off romance and throws herself into solving the shocking murder of her favorite teacher, Ms. Dunn.

Riley turns to her best friend, budding filmmaker Desmond Brandt, for help. What she doesn't know is that Dez has been secretly directing her life, blackmailing her friends, and hoping his manipulations will make her love him. When his schemes go too far, Dez's web of lies threatens to destroy both of their lives.

Interview with Dawn

Hi, Dawn! Thank you so much for agreeing to take some time from your busy schedule to answer some questions for us here at Bibliophilia, Please. Let’s break the ice a little before talking about The Cutting Room Floor – what is something funny about you that only your friends know?

Hmmm, that’s a tough one. I have a ton of embarrassing facts, but funny? Oh, I know. I fell down a manhole when I was in fourth grade. I wasn’t watching where I was going and chatting with a friend, and the cover was off the hole, and I just fell down it!

Okay, now to business. Please tell us a little bit about The Cutting Room Floor in your own words but with a Twitter twist – 140 characters or less.

TCRF is a YA thriller about a boy obsessed with the girl next door and a girl obsessed with finding her teacher’s killer.

What makes The Cutting Room Floor stand apart from other young adult novels?

The Cutting Room Floor is a creepy YA thriller about a seventeen-year-old girl, Riley, who tries to solve the murder of her teacher—and a filmmaker, Dez, who becomes obsessed with her. But, at its core, the novel is really about two characters trying to find love.

I think what makes this book stand out is its exploration of sexuality; a narrative that slips in and out of a movie/screenplay format; and the unsaid pieces of the story that allows the reader to draw their own conclusions. There are heavy issues in the story, yet it’s not an “issues book.”

It’s an entertaining, but scary, ride.

What was the first thing you knew about Desmond and/or Riley when you began writing The Cutting Room Floor?

The first thing I knew about Dez was he had a lot of issues! And he was really motivated by his desire to control things … and people. With Riley, I knew immediately that she was strong, loyal, and had a big heart.

What is your favorite distraction that you indulge in whenever you are writing?

Candy. There is nothing better than sitting at my computer to write with a bowl of candy at my fingertips.

Which books or authors would you say have affected or inspired you the most?

Gosh, too many to list. But, I can tell you that Laurie Halse Anderson and Sara Zarr have really influenced my writing as a YA contemporary author.

What are you currently reading?

Just One Day by Gayle Forman and Ten by Gretchen McNeil.

Finally, do you have any other upcoming projects or events that we can look forward to?

Yes! Next year I have another YA thriller coming out with Flux!

Thank you so much for stopping by and happy holidays!

About the Author

Dawn Klehr began her career in TV and though she’s been on both sides of the camera, she prefers to lurk behind the lens. Mostly, she loves to get lost in stories – in film, the theater, or on the page – and is a sucker for both the sinister and the sappy. She’s currently channeling her dark side as she works on her next book.

Dawn lives in the Twin Cities with her funny husband, adorable son, and naughty dog. The Cutting Room Floor is her debut YA novel.

  1. This book sounds really interesting and it will definitely be going onto my Goodreads. Great interview btw, I always like to see new sorts of questions being asked instead of the standard ones everyone else does.

  2. Thanks, Kristin! I try to come up with questions that will bring about different or entertaining answers, but not so crazy as to get a restraining order. (I could definitely ask stuff like that!)
