Spotlight (Interview): The Power of 10 by Rugger Burke #selfhelp @powerof10 @jkslitpublicity @angellebarbazon

Title: The Power of 10: A practice for engaging your voice of wisdom
Author:
Rugger Burke
Publisher: Mill City Press, Inc.
Release Date: June 30, 2015

How do we become our greatest selves?

The Power of 10 is a practice for engaging your voice of wisdom through a process of inquiry and advocacy. Inquiry increases awareness of what is through questions that invite us to examine our current state of being. Advocacy advances what is possible by encouraging us to live into that greater way of being in every thought, word, and action.

Together, inquiry and advocacy evoke the voice of wisdom—that quiet, still voice inside us, the confluence of knowledge, experience, and insight flowing through all living beings that speaks to us through our bodies, hearts, and minds.

We know more than we think we do. As we learn to listen closely to our voice of wisdom, it reveals our true nature and purpose, calls upon us to commit to something greater than ourselves, and guides us toward choices that help us reach our highest potential. When we live in harmony with our voice of wisdom, what is and what is possible align, and wholeness and happiness become our way of being.

Put simply, the Power of 10 is a practice for engaging your voice of wisdom to become the greatest you—the you who is meant to be.

Author Interview

Why did you write this book?
It’s the book I wish someone had given me…years ago. At its heart the book is about making good choices. Looking back, I made lots of poor choices—and the worst ones affected people I love. Many of those decisions were largely avoidable. Realizing this made clear the importance of learning how to make good choices. Knowing this now, I would have benefited from such a resource both as a leader and in my personal life.

There are many new books published each day. Why this one?

Author:
Mario Giordano & Frank Keith (Translator)
Publisher: Bastei Lübbe
Acquired Via: JKS Communications
Release Date: January 31, 2014
Last episode: July 18, 2014

New York City. A Chinese woman was brutally murdered and Jeremiah Cotton, a young cop with the NYPD, just can't let go. He suspects that the woman is the victim of a serial killer, but no one believes him and he is taken off the case. While carrying out an unauthorized investigation, Cotton encounters a division of the FBI whose existence no one knows about: the "G-Team." Stubborn and persistent, Cotton asks uncomfortable questions about the mysterious unit - and runs afoul of Special Agent Philippa "Phil" Decker in the process. When he narrowly escapes an attempt on his life, Cotton realizes that this is no ordinary killer hunt and the hotter the case is getting, the more determined he is to stay involved...

A new legend is born! Cotton FBI is a remake of a world famous cult series with more than one billion copies sold and appears bi-weekly with a self-contained story in each e-book episode.

My Review

Since serials are becoming quite the trend in publishing, so I figured it was time for me to give one a try. I didn't know what to really expect from Cotton FBI, but I gave it a try because I really like the people over at JKS Communications. I received the first episode of the first "season" and took it for a spin.

I must say that I was impressed with Cotton FBI. Within the first paragraph, I was sucked into the writing. I was running along with Jeremiah Cotton as he was trying to catch the guy who mugged him. And to be honest, I was quite surprised where the little job took Mr. Cotton and myself.

But choices have consequences.

Now Rachav’s family is in danger. As she uncovers the shocking reason why, she finds an ally in Salma, a brooding nomad who wields an ancient force powerful enough to destroy the entire kingdom. While the epic showdown rages above the city, Rachav plays a dangerous game of her own. Can she rescue her sister and right the wrongs of that fateful choice? Or will the king succeed and trap her in the doomed city?

My Review

Though I'm slowly trying to slow down the number of blog tours, when I was offered the opportunity to review Moonfall, I couldn't say anything but yes. Its premise is not something that has been offered to me very often, and who doesn't love a unique book? (Not me.)

Release Date: May 1, 2014

All Tate knows—like how to make weapons out of oranges and lighter fluid—may not be enough to save him as he’s plunged into a secret interspecies conflict that’s been going on for centuries. Aided only by his girlfriend and his estranged mother, with powerful enemies closing in on all sides, Tate races to puzzle out the secret behind his father’s invention and why so many are willing to kill for it.

A riveting, fast-paced adventure, Scan is a clever alien thriller with muscle and heart.

My Review

Okay, YA writers, the line has been drawn in the sand. If you're going to write about aliens, Scan by Walter Jury and Sarah Fine is what you're going to need to aspire to. Holy shit, is this book a wild ride! I literally stayed up all night reading it because it wouldn't let me go. Seriously. There's no stepping away from it, so be sure you don't have to feed your kids or anything. (Put food on the bottom shelves of the refrigerator or scatter cereal on the floor if so. Whichever.)

Title: In the Land of Magnanthia (Portals, Passages & Pathways #1)
Author:
B.R. Maul
Publisher: Amazon Digital Services
Tour Organizer: JKS Communications
Release Date: December 11, 2013

When a portal to another world cracks open just outside the small town of Riverside, it sets off a series of events forever changing the lives of two boys; one boy is chosen to lead a world to peace while the other one is chosen to tear it apart.

Simon Whittaker lives an ordinary teenage life until his best friend, Jessica Wells, and her family takes him on a last-minute camping trip. There, amongst towering pines, Jessica confesses a secret; her family has been watching over Simon his entire life because he is the key to another world’s salvation, and now someone has come from that world to kill him. Amidst a whirlwind of unanswered questions, doubt, and curiosity, Simon is given the Ring of Affinity and then is led through a magic portal into the land of Magnanthia.

In the faraway land that’s in the midst of a brutal war, Simon must place his life in the hands of a swordsman, ranger, cleric, and wizard sent to teach him how to wield the power in the Ring of Affinity and to help him become the next guardian of Magnanthia. The ring, Simon is told, has chosen him, a rare and honorable event. But no one knows why he was chosen.

Meanwhile, the once peaceable king of Magnanthia, King Elderten, has ordered death to Magnanthia’s nine guardians, the nine he helped to assemble and now believes is responsible for the death of his queen and the kingdom’s devastation. If he can stay alive long enough, Simon will become the first guardian of Magnanthia to be chosen by the Ring of Affinity, instead of appointed by mere men. Simon remains the only hope for those who believe the guardians are innocent.

Jak Jakobsin, another teenager from Earth, has been pulled through a portal by two of Bedlam’s demented soul seers sent to capture Simon. The soul seers were impressed with what they saw in Jak, so they offer him up to the overlord. Jak is given the ultimatum, do or die. Obsessed with his discovery of magic spells, power, and control, Jak quickly acclimates to his new environment. Bedlam’s overlord plans to use Jak, along with Bedlam’s undead army, to build a force so powerful that the great King Elderten will perish and Magnanthia will be his forever.

Allow me to take a moment to say, thank you. I appreciate both the time you took showing an interest in my work and the chance to say a little about Magnanthia, the magical world in Portals, Passages & Pathways book 1: In the Land of Magnanthia, on BibliophiliaPlease.com.

What’s it like?

The land of Magnanthia is an astonishing place to see…and live. I would pack my family up and move there in a heartbeat. Its mountains are majestic; its rivers and valleys are grand. The indigenous shiftwood trees can rival our skyscrapers here on Earth. And the spiritwood trees are so vibrant they almost shine. The scenery is breathtaking.

Title: The Professor
Author:
Robert Bailey
Publisher: Exhibit A (Random House)
Release Date: January 28, 2014

“In trials, like sports, sometimes winning means everything…”

Thomas Jackson McMurtrie is a living legend scorned. Forty years ago, he gave up a promising career as a trial lawyer to become a law professor at the University of Alabama at the request of his mentor, Alabama football Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Now Tom is forced into retirement, betrayed by both a powerful colleague and his own failing health.

Meanwhile the young family of one of his oldest friends is killed in a tragic road collision. Believing his career is over, Tom refers the case to a brilliant, yet beleaguered, former student, who begins to uncover the truth behind the tragedy, buried in a tangled web of arson, bribery and greed.

But as the eve of trial approaches, the young attorney’s case begins to unravel. In over his head and at the end of his rope, he realizes there’s only one man who can help…

The Professor is the first in a series of tense legal thrillers featuring the enthralling and brilliant legal team of McMurtrie and Drake, combining the thrills and authenticity of a John Grisham novel for the audience that flocked to “Friday Night Lights.”

Guest Post

Writing The Professor: Beginnings…
Robert Bailey

The idea for The Professor began with a spark that came during a daydream in law school. A question, really. Could one of my law professors try a case if he had to do it? Would the classroom cross over to the courtroom? I carried that question around in the back of my mind for several years before I put fingertips to keyboard, slowly visualizing the character of Tom McMurtrie in my mind.

After reading Stephen King’s memoir, On Writing, I thought I was finally ready to take a stab at writing this story. I went to a room in my house where I could shut the door, thought about the situation in my mind—longtime law professor comes back to try a case—and began writing. What came out was the prologue to The Professor.

Waterfell by Amalie Howard has one of the most imaginative premises that I've read in a young adult novel in quite some time. However, I need you to throw the summary completely out of the window because very little from it happens until about halfway through the novel.

Julie has authored the exciting Timeslip series a bevy of titles in Historical Romance and Regency, 21st Century Fiction, and Non-Fiction. DeMarco's Café, one of her 21st Century Fiction novellas, is being featured on Bibliophilia, Please today.

Title: DeMarco's Café
Author:
Julie Tetel Andresen
Publisher: Julie Tetel Andresen
Release Date: April 24, 2012

After her first year in law school, Dayna DeMarco returns to her family’s café in SoHo, suspecting financial problems. New to the neighborhood is Bo Grisham, a charming musician who makes a play for her. Dayna is pretty sure he spells trouble, and Bo is pretty sure he’ll soon be moving on. Neither can predict how events concerning the café’s future will change their hearts.

Excerpt

From force of habit Dayna began her shift by fussing with the plastic bins of lemon wedges, lime wedges, olives, and maraschino cherries. She squared off the small, warped cutting board and made sure the paring knife was placed precisely and diagonally across it. With a deft twist of her fist she fanned the stack of cocktail napkins so that they could be easily plucked one at a time. She idly stirred the glass bristling with the miniature red plastic cocktail straws and deemed it full enough to not need refilling. Ditto the shot glass with the toothpicks.

Title: The Realmsic Conquest: The Hero of Legend
Author:
Demethius Jackson
Publisher: Createspace
Release Date: August 23, 2013

From its establishment, the Realm, has remained the only magical kingdom in existence. As a result, it has never known peace. Although the kingdom has never fallen, it must now defend against the Warlord Damian – a brilliantly merciless conqueror who uses history as a weapon. Rallying those resentful of the Realm’s magic, Damian has amassed a Legion of Warriors – the largest military force ever assembled.

The Kingdom’s defeat is imminent!

Maebus, the Realm’s newest King, has only ruled for six days. Yet he must now lead the magical Realmsic Kingdom through its most perilous conflict ever.

My Review

The Hero of Legend is an epic fantasy by Demethius Jackson that is done on a grand scale. By that I mean it reads like many of the translations of historical literary texts. The story about Maebus, the newly appointed king from humble roots who must save the Realm from the evil Damian, is told in a manner that reminds me a lot of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The structure was slightly different than the poem, but The Hero of Legend was definitely not written in a way that I expected from a novel. It was a bit jarring to read at first (I'm on hiatus with school, so I'm rusty with non-traditional writing), but I eventually got back into the swing of things. I think this is the first thing that needs to be addressed in the review because The Hero of Legend won't be for everything because of its format, though it was a good book.

Title: All Our Yesterdays
Author:
Cristin Terrill
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Acquired Via: JKS Communications
Release Date: September 3, 2013

Imprisoned in the heart of a secret military base, Em has nothing except the voice of the boy in the cell next door and the list of instructions she finds taped inside the drain.

Only Em can complete the final instruction. She’s tried everything to prevent the creation of a time machine that will tear the world apart. She holds the proof: a list she has never seen before, written in her own hand. Each failed attempt in the past has led her to the same terrible present–imprisoned and tortured by a sadistic man called the doctor while war rages outside.

Marina has loved her best friend, James, since they were children. A gorgeous, introverted science prodigy from one of America’s most famous families, James finally seems to be seeing Marina in a new way, too. But on one disastrous night, James’s life crumbles, and with it, Marina’s hopes for their future. Marina will protect James no matter what, even if it means opening her eyes to a truth so terrible that she may not survive it… at least, not as the girl she once was. Em and Marina are in a race against time and each other, and only one of them can win.

All Our Yesterdays is a wrenching, brilliantly plotted story of fierce love, unthinkable sacrifice, and the infinite implications of our every choice.

My Review

I've read a lot of time travel and science fiction in the young adult realm lately, and I haven't been blown away. However, Cristin Terrill's debut, All Our Yesterdays, is the best example of each that I've read this year. All of the characters are intriguing and realistic, the plot kept me on the edge of my seat, and the science is believable.

Even the station’s most respected officer, Lt. Damian King, probably can’t help Cassiel pass the second time around – so why
is he so interested in her progress? If only one of her freaky déjà vu visions would offer an answer instead of mysterious messages like hide.

When Cassiel’s manipulated into a perilous mission, she encounters a warrior species bred to protect the universe from an even greater threat. And she learns that her secret visions are at the heart of it all.

Now Cassiel must fight to control her own destiny and race to save her brother – even if it means pretending to be the pawn of Prime Or’ic, the cold-as-steel Thell’eon leader. Even if it means risking her life, facing hard truths, and making the ultimate sacrifice.

Interview with Lesley Young

Hi, Lesley! Thank you so much for agreeing to take some time from your busy schedule to answer some questions for us here at Bibliophilia, Please. Let’s break the ice a little before talking about Sky's End – what is something funny about you that only your friends know?

Oh how I wish this was a short list. If I had to name just one, let’s just say I make Bella’s clumsiness seem cute. In fact, I’ve tripped and fallen, mind you, in more than 11 cities around the world. I know this because it was a trivia question at my wedding. Also . . . hm, should I admit this? Oh why not — my brother’s nickname for me growing up was "Lurch". I am tall (5’10) so it’s gotta be a center of gravity thing.
