Waiting on Wednesday (12)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event that is hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine and spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Splintered
Author: A.G. Howard
Publisher:
Amulet (ABRAMS)
Release Date: January 1, 2013

For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell -- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an unusual website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place more twisted and eerie than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

I could probably write for hours about why I am so excited about this book. First off - I love Lewis Carroll so freakin' much. The closest I came to getting a tattoo was something I commissioned from a Carroll artist. Who knows? I may do it still. Not many authors have captured the essence of Alice in Wonderland, in my opinion, but A.G. Howard's focus on the madness gives me hope. The non-Disney movie adaptations of the book have scared the crap out of me. The Jabberwocky gives me nightmares. It's supposed to be dark! Fairy tales are dark! *quivers in excitement* Secondly, look at the cover! If that doesn't draw you in, it is because you're a nutter. The thing that gets me the most is the ant crawling on her neck. It makes me want to reach into the picture and swat it off of that poor girl! (I hate bugs!) And if the cover alone makes me react, then I have very high hopes for the novel itself. Finally, I've been hearing whispers of this book for a while now. Folks are talking. I want in on the secret.

Oh, and I'm totally jealous that my blogger-bestie Krazy Book Lady (who is awesome on so many levels that I don't have time to get into right now) got to do the Cover Reveal! You should go check it out, and let them know what you think of it there, too.

  4. I've not heard of this before, but I'm loving all the retakes of Alice in Wonderland; it's such a bizarre, quirky and original story on its own it begs for differing takes on it. And I quite like the idea of creepy counterparts to the original characters. Thanks for sharing, adding to my To-Read list!

  12. Wicked, this is also the book I'm waiting for this week! I totally agree with you. I like the fact that fairytales are dark. The sweet adaptions are nice, but I would like to see the darkness portrayed sometimes.
