SLEEPY HOLLOW ISN'T SO SLEEPY ANYMORE…
One night, New York FBI agent Aiden Mahoney receives a visitor in a dream—an old friend named Richard Highsmith. The very next day he's sent to Sleepy Hollow because Richard's gone missing there.
Maureen—Mo—Deauville now lives in the historic town and works with her dog, Rollo, to search for missing people. She's actually the one to find Richard…or more precisely his head, stuck on a statue of the legendary Headless Horseman.
Mo and Aiden, a new member of the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI's unit of paranormal investigators, explore both past and present events to figure out who betrayed Richard, who killed him and now wants to kill them, too. As they work together, they discover that they share an unusual trait—the ability to communicate with the dead. They also share an attraction that's as intense as it is unexpected...if they live long enough to enjoy it!
My Review
You can read my review of The Hexed (Krewe of Hunters #13), HERE.
The Betrayed is my second Heather Graham novel and the latest in her Krewe of Hunters series. While the writing and pace are good, the characters don't have as much drawing me to them as those in the previous novel. However, being as the murders in the story are centered on Sleepy Hollow, it was a fun read for the month of October.
I've decided that I like Graham's paranormal mysteries because they remind me a bit of my beloved urban fantasy novels. I think the way that the Krewe of Hunters series is done, it can appeal to a wider audience than just mystery readers or UF nuts like myself. Really heavy suspense is a turn-off for me, so when books have a lot of side paths, I tend to get distracted from the bigger picture. The various "quirks" of the Krewe members and their associates are enjoyable to read about while waiting to find out whodunnit.
I really didn't dig Mo and Aiden like I did Devin and Rocky in The Hexed.. I didn't come to the party just for the romance, but their entire interaction throughout the novel fell a bit flat. There are quite a few secondary characters and a wolfhound that keeps The Betrayed from getting dull. I mean, who can resist a wolfhound?
If you're looking for something creepy to read on Halloween that isn't too commercialized (pumpkins, skeletons, etc.), I recommend giving The Betrayed or any of Graham's Krewe of Hunters series a try.

ReplyDeletethis sounds awesome!! thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe Salem, MA history/witchcraft element of the plot of the last book and now the Sleepy Hollow take off make this series irresistible to me. I'm very curious to see what Graham will do with the material in the Irving classic. It's a must-read; I can't wait! Thanks for this feature and chance to win! Cheers, Kara
