A PLACE OF HISTORY, SECRETS… AND WITCHCRAFT
Devin Lyle has recently returned to the Salem area, but her timing couldn't be worse. Soon after she moved into the eighteenth-century cabin she inherited from her great-aunt Mina—her "crazy" great-aunt, who spoke to the dead—a woman was murdered nearby.
Craig Rockwell—known as Rocky—is a new member of the Krewe of Hunters, the FBI's team of paranormal investigators. He never got over finding a friend dead in the woods. Now another body's been found in those same woods, not far from the home of Devin Lyle. And Devin's been led to a third body—by…a ghost?
Her discovery draws them both deeper into the case and Salem's rich and disturbing history. Even as the danger mounts, Devin and Rocky begin to fall for each other, something the ghosts of Mina and past witches seem to approve of. But the two of them need every skill they possess to learn the truth—or Devin's might be the next body in the woods…
My Review
Have you guys ever read anything by Heather Graham? I haven't before The Hexed, and part of why I didn't is 1) I don't read a lot of crime drama, and 2) my grandmother reads her books. Huge mistake on my part! I'm also glad that I didn't see the business of this being the thirteenth book in the Krewe of Hunters series, because this novel stands alone (as far as I'm concerned), and I would have missed out on a fantastic book! The Hexed has a lot of suspense, a little bit of paranormal, a bit of romance, and a ton of awesome.
Usually when I read a mystery or suspense novel, I find myself skipping to the back of the book because the tension kills me. Heather Graham wrote The Hexed in such a way that I enjoyed the pace in which the story unraveled. I enjoyed guessing who the murderer was, and I was actually a little surprised by it. I would've bet my money on someone else entirely, but I guess that's half the fun of reading the genre.
Devin Lyle and Craig "Rocky" Rockwell were fabulous adult protagonists. I was able to nerd out about Devin because she's the nerdy sort who writes children's books, and Rocky was crushworthy because he was an FBI manly-man. The chemistry between the two of them was great, too, and I loved how he seemed to merge seamlessly into Devin's life. It was nice to see two characters who are pretty much made for each other.
Although I recently read another book based in Salem, it didn't taint or take away from The Hexed. This story was based more of the practitioners of the Wiccan religion, and the paranormal aspect of the novel dealt with ghosts. Devin's aunt Mina is an important character, nevermind the fact that she's been dead for a while. The Hexed was written so realistically that I could imagine this going on in Salem, ghosts and all.
In The Hexed I have found another type of mystery that I like and an author that I'm fairly sure that I will love. And, lucky me, there are at least fourteen other books in the Krewe of Hunters series for me to read. If you've never read any of these books, The Hexed would be a great place to start.
