Octavia Leander, a young healer with incredible powers, has found her place among Miss Percival's medicians-in-training. Called to the frontlines of a never-ending war between Caskentia and the immoral Wasters, the two women must uncover the source of a devastating illness that is killing thousands of soldiers. But when Octavia's natural talents far outshine her teacher's, jealousy threatens to destroy their relationship—as time runs out to save the encampment.

Fans of Beth Cato's debut, The Clockwork Dagger, will love this journey into Octavia's past—as well as an exclusive excerpt from the sequel, The Clockwork Crown!

My Review

The Clockwork Dagger by Beth Cato is not a book that I've read, but it's been hanging out on the old TBR (to be read) list since before it came out. When the opportunity came to read and review The Deepest Poison, I knew this would be a great opportunity to get a taste for Cato's writing style and worldbuilding. I was not disappointed.

The Deepest Poison is only forty-something pages long, so I didn't get much more than a taste of what was going on (but I want more!). Cato's writing is evocative, and I love to be able to imagine places as I read. World-building has always been very important to me (I read mainly for escapism), and The Deepest Poison really transports me to that world. I'm going on to read The Clockwork Dagger on this alone.

That's not to say that Octavia isn't fantastic. She is definitely someone that I want to learn more about. Just as soon as I started getting attached to her and getting into the story, it was over. I mean, can I please have The Clockwork Dagger now, please?

If you want a taste of the writing and world-building before you invest in reading The Clockwork Dagger duology, The Deepest Poison is a great place to start, and I promise you'll be left wanting more. I've also heard that if you've already read the first book, this prequel will give you more depth to that story.
