Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop

Welcome to my stop on the Fairy Tale Giveaway Hop hosted by Kathy @ I Am a Reader, Not a Writer and Velvet @ vvb32 reads. We're very lucky folks to have them putting all of this together for us. I hope that you follow their blogs. :-)

Let's get down to the fairy tales. I want to share a few of my favorite hero/ines with, which was no small feat to put together. I have read hundreds of fairy tales from many, many cultures, but three automatically popped into my head when I thought of my favorites.

One of Andersen's best-beloved tales, The Snow Queen is a story about the strength and endurance of childhood friendship. When the coldhearted Snow Queen abducts Kai, Gerda begins a magical and perilous journey to find her playmate and release him from the Snow Queen's treacherous spell.

Six brothers from a King's first marriage have been turned into swans by their hateful stepmother (a beautiful but evil daughter of a witch). The brothers can only take their human forms for fifteen minutes every evening. In order to free them, their sister must make six shirts out of starwort for her brothers, and neither speak nor laugh for six years.

Two sisters lived down Louisiana way long ago: Rose, who was unpleasant, mean, and the older of the two; and her younger sister, Blanche, who was "sweet and kind and sharp as forty crickets." Guess who has to do all the work for Rose and their mother? Blanche's kind and obedient nature finally pays off when she helps an old woman who has magical powers--and a chicken house full of talking eggs containing treasures for those who do as they're told: gold and silver, jewels, silk dresses, satin shoes, "even a handsome carriage that grew in a wink from the size of a matchbox...." Robert D. San Souci's lively, humorous retelling of this Creole folktale abounds with colorful expressions, and Jerry Pinkney's full-page illustrations make us believe in the marvels that Blanche finds, even the two-headed cow, square-dancing rabbits, and rainbow-colored chickens!

I bet you're wondering what you can win now. A prize, I tell ya, a PRIZE! How about I let YOU choose any fairy tale collection or retelling of YOUR choosing, as long as it is less than $10 (USD). Well, unless you want to choose The Talking Eggs. I'll make an exception for that one since it is one of my favorites, and it was listed. (Sorry guys, but I've been having a lot of giveaways, and I am not independently wealthy. Yet.)

Giveaway Requirements:
  • Be thirteen (13) years old, have parental consent, or lie about it. (Please don't do that.)
  • Live somewhere that can get books from Amazon or the Book Depository.
  • Following is not required, but it is appreciated. Your options can be found on the right sidebar, though I don't have the pretty buttons yet. (I wouldn't recommend Linky because I don't understand it.)
  • Sharing the giveaway is not required either, but spreading the word about my stop or the hop in general will be greatly appreciated.

  3. I always liked Three Little Pigs, Puss in Boots, Rumpelstiltskin, Thumbelina & The Wishing-table, the Gold-Ass and the Cudgel in the Sack. We used to have a record of the Three Little Pigs story that I loved to play as a child. :)

  4. I really loved The Tenth Kingdom (book and miniseries) because it stayed true to the core of the Grimm tales but also still gave you that fanciful feeling of a Disney retelling.
