Halloween Themed Top Ten
I don't really read that many horror novels anymore. I already have an over-active imagination and night terrors; I don't need to add novels to get more ideas. So this is just a mix-up of Halloween themed media.
1. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
Coraline is one of the creepiest books for children I have ever read. I think if I had been a child when I read it, I might have had nightmares for a long time.
2. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
What's more spooky and creepy than graveyards around Halloween? Growing up in a graveyard!
3. Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna #1) by Kendare Blake
A ghost killer and a ghost dripping in blood = creepy in my book.
4. Any story or poem by Edgar Allen Poe
5. The Shining by Stephen King
6. It by Stephen King
I read my first Stephen King book this year, and really enjoyed it. I'm just scared to read any of his real horror novels. I do have the The Dark Tower on my TBR, and Kayla recommended Duma Key. But, if I read a true horror King novel, I think It would either be The Shining or It. Horror clowns...*shudders*
7. The Thief of Always by Clive Barker
I bought this in a used bookstore in Austin earlier this year, because I had always heard great things about it. Plus, it has been compared to Coraline to me more than once.
Since Halloween falls on the Friday of Voodoo Fest, I'm making my brothers and boyfriend dress up with me. Here are our costumes so far:
8. Phoenix (Jean Grey) from X-Men
I ordered it through an awesome website that made it to my measurements. And, my long red wig came in this week! I'm so excited. Plus, I've always wanted to be able to move things with my mind.
9. Thor
The boyfriend has a blonde wig, too. hehe
10. Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th
While one brother is dragging his feet on buying a costume, the other is going as Jason. When I was a kid, we used to watch these ALL THE TIME. Probably why I have night terrors now and attack inanimate objects in my sleep.
Gaiman, Poe, and King Oh My! Absolutely great choices.
ReplyDeleteI just read the Graveyard Book a couple of days ago. It is such a great story and I love the culture of the graveyard. The ending was just perfection. I've been told twice in the last week that I need to read or watch Coraline so I guess that'll be going on my to-reads list. I also want to try out some Poe sometime.
ReplyDeleteI really want to like King, but I don't know if it's my thing. I read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon and it was good... but it was very gruesome in a real (not supernatural or murder) sense and I don't know how I'd like his other books.

I'm glad you liked Gaiman! He's my book-pusher author. I try to make everyone try out at least one of his books. Poe is also a must! His stories are so great and creepy!

ReplyDeleteTo my shame though I have to admit that I've never read The Graveyard Book, though I've really wanted to. I just somehow never end up buying it. Same goes for It, though I've read lots of Stephen King's novels. Just never that one.

I'm jealous! I've always wanted that copy. I have a thing for the Penguin classics and B&N hard cover versions of classics. They're so pretty. You should definitely read The Graveyard Book, although Neverwhere is my favorite Gaiman book so far.
