Top Ten Books Which Feature Characters Who Are Talking Animals


1. Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne - Oberon
Oberon is the main character, Atticus', Irish wolfhound. They have a psychic bond, so they're able to speak to one another through their minds. Their banter is hilarious, but Oberon is probably the very best thing about the entire series. Sausage anyone?





2. His Dark Materials by Phillip Pullman - Pantalaiman
I mean, who doesn't want a daemon after reading these books? Pantalaiman was a saucy little critter, and I think I may need to reread these books now.





3. A Horse and His Boy (The Chronicles of Narnia) by C.S. Lewis - Bree
You didn't think that we'd get through this list without some Narnia, did you? I'm choosing Bree from The Horse and His Boy because Aslan is too obvious of a choice. I loved his horsey attitude, and I think this might just be my favorite book in the entire series.





4. Storm Front by Jim Butcher - Bob
Okay, I realize that Bob is just a skull, but skulls come from animals or whatever, so it counts. (I've also heard that he's more than a skull sometimes.) And I might as well admit that I've only read Storm Front, but I liked it. I own the next two on Audible, so I'll read them soon. :-P





5. Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris

6. Red-Headed Stepchild by Jaye Wells - Giguhl
Granted, Giguhl is only a hairless cat part of the time, he is hilarious all of the time. I would love for him to get his own series, maybe as a prequel to the Sabina Kane books?





7. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle - Aunt Beast
Now, I know that she's not really an animal, at least in the way we consider, but she needs all the shout-outs that I can give her. She's one of my favorite characters from my childhood.





8. The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Smaug
If only they had used a real dragon in the movies so he could've eaten everyone who made that awful trilogy...





9-10. Watchers by Dean Koontz - Einstein & The Outsider
Watchers literally changed the way that I looked at the world. Very seldom do I recommend this book to people because I hold it so close to my heart, but I think someone could love it just as much as me if they're the right person to read it. What I took away from Einstein and The Outsider is that monsters aren't always born, sometimes they're made and not always in a literal sense.
