When Eva Tilling wakes up in the hospital, she's confused—who in her sleepy little North Carolina town could have hit her with their car? And why?

It seems impossible that anyone would have it out for the town darling. Thanks to her family's distinguished history and her own unassailable reputation in old-money Jessup, Eva is universally liked. But she has little time to consider the question when she finds that she's awoken with a strange new skill: the ability to foresee people's deaths when they touch her.

Eva is struggling to understand just what these visions mean when a slew of murders takes place back home. The victims, all classmates, are discovered alongside eerie messages that tie the incidents to her. There is a killer on the loose, and he is after Eva.

While she is recovering from the hit-and-run, Nate, an old friend, reappears. The two traverse their rocky past as they figure out how to use Eva's power to keep her friends—and themselves—alive. But while Eva and Nate grow closer, the determined killer grows increasingly frantic in his attempt to get to Eva.

Chilling twists, unrequited obsession, and high-stakes romance drive Melissa Marr's racy thriller—a story of small-town oppression and salvation.

My Review

I haven't had luck with the two Melissa Marr books that I've read in the past, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to read Made for You because of, let's be honest, that cover. I hate flying things, but that gilded bug from Hell drew my eye and kept me thinking about it. I'm pretty sure it's a locust, but WHY IS IT IN A RING BOX?!

This, kids, is how you use a bug effectively on a book cover.

I was very pleased with the interior of Made for You, as well, because the story kept me just as on the edge of my seat as the cover. Though there is a paranormal bit to the story, it deals with a very real and very scary subject - stalking. I was stalked in college, and I could barely leave my dorm room for over a month and never alone. Eva has no idea that she is being stalked in Made for You, and the reader does not know who is doing it until the reveal, despite chapters being told from his point of view. (I mean, I knew, but I made the special point to pay attention to clues. Huzzah!) Seriously though, the idea of being stalked without knowing it chills me to my core.

There is a lot of talk and attention paid to the idea of a southern social hierarchy. I was never a part of the "in" crowd when I was at the school where that sort of thing mattered, but I didn't pay that much heed to it either. (I was more interested in cultivating my evil brain skills.) I did, however, see many people go down a dark path, trying everything in their power to be accepted and popular. This was done believably by Marr because even though you may not participate, you can't help but notice the boundaries of popularity. I can definitely imagine someone becoming so obsessed that they do pretty psychotic things so the system works as they believe it should.

I liked the main character, Eva, a lot. She was the queen bee and most popular girl in the school, but she was also fairly nice. Not once in Made for You did I see her treat anyone badly. I also liked her character arc because she has to overcome a lot following her wreck and reevaluate who and what is important to her. Oh, there was also that business with seeing people's deaths, but Eva handled it as well as someone could be expected to.

Overall, I really enjoyed Made for You. I'm definitely interested in reading more books from Marr, and I think I'm almost what you could call a fan of mysteries and thrillers now. If you like your mysteries with a smidge of paranormalcy, I think you'll enjoy Made for You.
